International Service is an international development charity, founded in 1953. Its mission is to work alongside change-makers at every level to end poverty and discrimination in communities across the world.[1]

International Service currently works in Burkina Faso, Ghana, the occupied Palestinian territories, Malawi and Rwanda, and is based in York, United Kingdom.[2]

International Service works in partnership with organisations based in developing communities. Together with local people, they work to ensure that those living in poverty have the tools to challenge injustice and change their futures for the better.

History[edit]

International Service began in 1953. After storms caused extensive flood damage in the Netherlands, the United Nations Association UK (UNA-UK) recruited 11 UK volunteers to help repair the damage caused by the storm and rebuild communities. UNA-UK referred to this as their 'international service programme'.[3]

Following this, the UNA-UK formed a separate branch, dedicated to overseas support and development work, which they named the United Nations Association International Service (UNAIS). Since 1997, UNAIS has operated under the working name International Service.[4]

From the 1960s through to the 2000s, International Service recruited development workers for 2-3-year placements in Latin America, West Africa and the Middle East. Development workers worked alongside local project partners to tackle specific challenges. UNAIS became independent of the UNA in 1993.

International Service today[edit]

In 2011, International Service became one of seven British development organisations that delivers the International Citizen Service (ICS).[5]

This UK government-funded programme brings together young people aged 18-35 from the UK and overseas to tackle the cause of poverty in developing countries.[6] ICS is funded by the UK Department for International Development.

As of 2018, International Service also delivers the REACT project, where volunteers will coach goalball to change attitudes to disability.[5] [7]
