Into the Dark: Narakan is a mobile game created by indie-game development studio, Orc Punk. Into the Dark: Narakan is the first IP, developed by Orc Punk. Into the Dark: Narakan is set to release on November, 8th of 2018 on iOS, and Android on a later date. Into the Dark: Narakan is a tile-based, top-down, turn-based adventure strategy game with a minimalist style and dark ambient mood. The game takes place in a mysterious forest labyrinth; the player controls the KNIGHT, who awakens to find himself disoriented, unarmed, and near-defenseless. However, amidst his peril, he hears a faint, yet familiar voice which beckons him into the dark maze. As of October 2018; “Into the Dark: Narakan” has over 1K pre-orders and was featured on Apple's App Store’s pre-releases.[1]

Gameplay[edit]

Into the Dark: Narakan is a tile-based, top-down, turn-based adventure strategy game set in a grid-like map, the KNIGHT must traverse the forest that increases in difficulty with each step. Into the Dark: Narakan features a linear, yet open tile-based map. Players may also find miscellaneous weapons and loot that can aid the knight during enemy encounters. Each area starts the player in the middle of a forest labyrinth, only able to see his immediate surroundings, everything else hidden from view. The player’s goal is to find the GIRL in each area while avoiding being killed by the ENEMY creatures. Landing on a tile adjacent to the GIRL triggers the end of that area and moves the player to the next area.

Player can tap any tile on the map to control the KNIGHT moving him to that tile, as long as no enemies are visible. Once enemies are visible, player can tap any adjacent tiles to move up, down, left, or right. Player can always swipe to move in these same directions. As the player moves the KNIGHT on the map, he can receive feedback about what is hidden in the darkness around him, giving him a compass of sorts to guide his movements. ENEMY movement occurs subsequent to the player movement in a rapid turn sequence, and no matter the number of enemies in the level, they all move within that turn.

Into the Dark comprises of 3 acts, The Dark Forest, The Dying Forest, and The Frozen Forest sequentially. As players progress through the level, the difficulty increases. Enemies become more complex and stronger. Currently, there are 6 enemies that exist within the forest. The enemies consist of the gloomy creature, the shade beast, the dusk buzzard, the black wizard, the murk giant, and an opponent that controls all of the aforementioned creatures of the dark. Each creature has unique attack pattern in addition to a personality, which controls the level of aggressiveness of each enemy.

Development[edit]

Orc Punk was founded in December 2017 by Adriano Valle shortly after he learned to program. Amidst a shift in careers; he began learning programming in 2014, and unity 3D in 2015 through Playcrafting NYC[2]. “Into the Dark: Narakan” was a game he began designing in class with little to no budget as a passion project. The art style started as an attempt to make the game in the browser as part of a web development class. Initially, the game was intended to be programmed all out of HTML and CSS only. Into the dark: Narakan’s visual style was born from technical constraints during development of the game’s initial incarnation, but has since become it’s defining visual vocabulary. Hard edges and sharp points, solid shapes built upon a modular grid framework, manipulated to create repetitive, inter-locking patterns, using a limited palette of solid, analogous colors. New assets, although no longer limited by technical constraints, are created within the same parameters, maintaining a cohesive visual language throughout the game.

Chess provided the seed of inspiration for Into the Dark , particularly from research into the royal game’s appearances in literature. However, there were many other games that served as reference for various components of that make up Into the Dark’s dna. The compelling fantasy-adventure elements of The Legend of Zelda influenced the dark whimsical tone of the game. Hoplite was a source of inspiration for the roguelike elements, providing a blueprint for the games gameplay framework. The storytelling elements within the Final Fantasy universe helped to create a fictional story with character building.

Plot[edit]

Into the Dark begins once the knight awakens from his unconscious state. His armor is cracked and worn, his sword lies in pieces by his side. The heavy fog that permeates the forest forebodes an evil presence beyond the trees, filling the KNIGHT with tension and fear. In his current state, armour near breaking and without a good blade in hand, battles are all more lethal. As his equilibrium sets in, he hears a faint whisper on the wind, like the voice of a child. A girl’s voice keeps calling his name, repeating it from somewhere in the darkness. The fog and the trees disperse the sound, making it near impossible to tell which direction it’s coming from. All he know is that to help the girl, he’ll have to go into the dark…

The KNIGHT must traverse through the woods, alone, spartan, facing various enemies and an unforgiving environment that hinders the senses. Along the journey he slowly regains his memories and fights the hidden evil that commands the forest.
