Ivaylo Ivanov is a Bulgarian-American criminal. He pleaded guilty to four counts of criminal mischief in the Fourth Degree as a hate crime.

Early life[edit]

Ivanov was born in Sicily and raised in Bulgaria.[1] The New York Post claimed that he had once worked as a paid informant for the New York Police Department, helping seize a businessman who bought stolen cell phones from him, but in March the prosecutors dropped the charges after discovering that Ivanov was an informant. According to Ivanov’s court-appointed attorney Adrian Lesher, Ivanov is of Jewish descent[2], but he did not specify whether it was his mother or father who was ethnically Jewish. Lesher also claimed that Ivanov is a linguist and Ivanov’s neighbor said that he was “always around walking the dog, all the time.” At the time of his arrest he was either 37-years-old or 31.[3]

Criminal activity[edit]

In September 24, 2007, Ivanov spraypainted swastikas on automobiles, sidewalks, private homes, schools, and two synagogues in Brooklyn Heights. He also scattered fliers and pamphlets with messages like "Israel Land of Pigs", "All Jews Die"[1] [2], “Kill All Jews” and “SS + Jew = Soap”.[3][4] Police interviewed him at his Brooklyn Heights home about his interest in playing paintball, but at that time they saw neither bomb-making equipment nor firearms, only a paintball gun. Although officials had suspected him from the beginning, they found no evidence conclusively connecting him to the crimes.[3][2]

Arrest[edit]

In January 20, 2008, Ivanov was in his apartment and accidentally shot himself in the finger with a 9mm handgun while he was cleaning it. At about 1 A.M. he confronted police officers and told them that somebody had shot him in the finger. He agreed to let officials search his flat in the Remsen Street area, where they found the handgun, a hunting rifle, a crossbow, a sawed-off shotgun, a bullet-proof vest, ammunition and eight home-made pipe bombs. Ivanov claimed that he had manufactured the bombs to use while fishing, was trained by Mossad, and that he was a trained sniper.[1][5] Ivanov said that his acts of defacement were a result of “bad judgment” and “rage.”[3]

Trial[edit]

Initially Ivanov plead not guilty to the charges of criminal mischief and aggravated harassment when arrested in 2008.[2] In February 2010 he plead guilty to weapons possession and criminal mischief as a hate crime, confessing to spray painting swastikas on numerous locations in his neighborhood and possessing a secret cache of explosives and other weapons.[6] He was sentenced to eighteen years for possessing pipe bombs, an additional fifteen for owning a 9mm handgun, and one-and-a-third to four years for each count of Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree as a Hate Crime.[7]
