J.R. VanHoose is a former professional basketball player [1], and 1998 Kentucky Mr. Basketball. He was drafted 47th overall in the 2002 NBA Development League draft. VanHoose is also a published author of historical reference books and articles.

Collegiate Career[edit]

VanHoose was recruited[2] by several NCAA Division I[3] programs across the nation[4], with Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, and Marshall as his top three -- ultimately choosing Marshall as his home. He played for Head Coach Greg White from 1998-2002.[5]

High School Career[edit]

VanHoose played at Paintsville High School under Coach Bill Mike Runyon from 1993-1998. The Paintsville Tigers won the KHSAA 15th Region Championship four straight years, appearing in four straight KHSAA Sweet Sixteen Tournaments. The Tigers saw much success at Rupp Arena; they were KHSAA Sweet Sixteen Champions in 1996, reached the Final Four in 1997, and Runner-Up in 1998. VanHoose was named Sweet Sixteen MVP in the 1996 Tiger victory. VanHoose was named 1996 Sweet Sixteen MVP as a Sophomore. VanHoose's recruitment by the University of Kentucky was closely followed throughout his high school season, featured in Blue Yonder[6], a book written by Lonnie Wheeler.
