John Smoke Wallin[1] is an American entrepreneur and the current CEO of Vertical Wellness, a CBD and hemp-based cannabis CPG company[2]. Wallin has also founded several companies including Taliera,[3] Beach Whiskey, eSkye Solutions,[4] the Wine Industry Technology Symposium and, most recently, the cannabis company Vertical.[5] He is also the former president and chairman of Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America[6] and helped build National Wine & Spirits (now RNDC (Republic National Distributing Company) and Breakthru Beverage).[7]

Early life and education[edit]

John Smoke Wallin was born in 1966. He grew up in Longboat Key, Florida, where he attended Bayshore High School until his graduation in 1984. Wallin earned his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics from Cornell University in 1988,[8] where he was a part of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He also received an MBA from Vanderbilt University in 1993.[9]

Career[edit]

Wallin also founded the Wine Industry Technology Symposium in 2005, and he continued to co-chair and run the symposium until 2015.[10]

In 2015, he founded Beach Whiskey and served as their CEO[11] until 2017, when he stepped down as CEO of Beach Whiskey to focus on Taliera, a brand management

In 2018, Wallin was brought on as President of Distribution for Vertical Companies.[12] He and Vertical partnered with rapper The Game and entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk to promote the cannabis brand Trees By Game.[13]

Wallin served as Chairman & President of the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA).[14] He also held multiple roles within Young Presidents' Organization,[15] including Chairman of the Global Beer Wine & Spirits Network Junior Achievement organization in Indiana[16]and the Experiential Learning & Entrepreneurship Foundation (ELEF).

Personal life[edit]

Wallin named eSkye Solutions after his oldest son Skye.[17] He is married to singer-songwriter Anitra Carr.

Recognition[edit]

Wallin was named one of the Indiana Business Journal's “Forty under 40”[18] in 1996 and received the Vanderbilt Business “Distinguished Alumni Award”.[19] Wallin also received the Entrepreneur of the Year Award from EY in 2001.
