Jamal Ara (Urdu: جمال آرا‎; born 1 May 1936) is a Pakistani doctor.

Early life[edit]

Youth and education[edit]

Dr. Jamal Ara was born on 1st May 1936 in Mardan, Pakistan. She is the daughter of Qazi Taj-ul-Maluk, a banker who belonged to an eminent Qazi Syed family of Nowshera. She did her metric from Government Girls' High School in Mardan in 1951, and FSC from Government Frontier College for Women, Peshawar in 1953, at the time Mrs. Brotherton as principal. She graduated from Fatima Jinnah Medical College in 1958, with Dr. Shujat Ali as principal.

Work and Career[edit]

She started her work as a woman medical officer in Zanana Hospital, a separate wing in Lady Reading Hospital at the time, under the guidance of Dr. Shafqat Munir. After some time she was transferred to Zanana Hospital, DHQ, Abbottabad from where she was transferred to Swabi General Hospital. There in Swabi she served as a General Practitioner and a Gynecologist. She was again transferred to Kohat General hospital where she worked for six months. She was transferred again to DHQ hospital, Abbotabad where she continued her service till 1965.

In 1965 she married Dr. Muhammad Shafique and they moved to Dhudial together.

When the family moved to Peshawar, she worked as a Woman Medical Officer, in Zanana Hospital Hashtnagar, Peshawar. She resigned from her government service in 1973, and dedicated herself to private practise in her clinic. She was a General Practitioner, mostly looked after young children and gynae/opt patients, and for a very long time, was the only practising female doctor catering the psychiatric patients in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

She had a very large number of psychiatric patients from all over KPK and Afghanistan and especially dealt with the female psychiatric population.

She retired from her work in 2016.

She is one of the pioneer doctors of Frontier Province, was dedicated to her profession, worked tirelessly, would do difficult operations and was the only female doctor who did autopsies in her time during her job in Swabi and Abbottabad.
