James C. Madden[1] (born June 1961) is an American entrepreneur, investor and pioneer of the HR BPO sector[2]. He founded Exult[3], where he served as chairman and chief executive officer, and led the company’s IPO in 2000. After merging Exult into Hewitt Associates of Lincolnshire, Illinois, Madden became a special advisor with General Atlantic in 2005, where he actively supported or co-led investments in Genpact, ServiceSource, and TriNet where he was Vice Chairman from 2005 through 2008.

In 2007 he became a General Partner with Accretive, LLC (then Accretive Technology Partners), a private equity firm focused on early-stage technology services businesses. During his tenure at Accretive, Madden co-founded Insureon with Michael Cline and Jared Kaplan, and Accolade with Michael Cline and Tom Spann. In 2012 Madden co-founded Carrick Capital Partners, where he is a board member of portfolio companies Accolade, Axiom, Exiger, Everspring, InstaMed and Mavenlink, and co-chairs the investment committee with Co-founder and Managing Director Marc McMorris.

Madden graduated magna cum laude, earning a BBA in finance and a BA in geology from Southern Methodist University. He also attended Webb Institute of Naval Architecture.

Early life[edit]

Madden was raised in Oyster Bay, NY, the oldest of two children of James C. Madden, IV and Linda M. Madden (Lizza). Madden is the fifth, first born male across five generations of James C. Maddens and the grandson of Elia Lizza, founder of Lizza & Sons (later Lizza Industries), a NY based heavy construction company active from the 1940s through 1970s. In his early years, Madden worked for his grandfather’s construction company and sailed on Long Island Sound where he developed a love of sailing, an interest in business, and a passion for competition.

Other professional roles and awards[edit]

Madden is the co-author of "Human Resources Business Process Outsourcing: Transforming How HR Gets Its Work Done" published by Jossey-Bass. He has won the Price Waterhouse "World Achievement Award”, the Ernst & Young “Excellence in Entrepreneurship” award, and the Deloitte & Touche “Fast Company” award. He is the past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hoag Hospital Foundation and an active supporter of CHOC (Children’s Hospital of OC).

Madden is a competitive sailor. His racing team, “Stark Raving Mad”, has won numerous races including the Newport Bermuda Race, the Rolex Swan Cup, and Key West Race Week (twice).
