James Purpura is an American lacrosse coach. In July of 2020, he was named the 7th coach in VMI LACROSSE history after serving as the Arcadia University head coach for two seasons.[1]

Playing Career[edit]

Purpura was born in Rochester, New York. Purpura attended and graduated from Pittsford Sutherland High School where he was a member of both the Lacrosse and Hockey teams. Purpura initially attended Mount Saint Mary's University on an athletic scholarship in 2010 but transferred to SUNY Geneseo where he continued his lacrosse career as an attackman.

Coaching Career[edit]

An injury ended Purpura's playing career and prompted him to enter coaching. Purpura graduated a semester early from college to enter college coaching where he began his career as an offensive coordinator at SUNY Brockport. During his first season, Purpura coached in the Division III IMLCA Senior All-Star game for the North team. Purpura then left Brockport to obtain a GA position at Frostburg State University. At Frostburg, Frostburg was ranked for the first time in program history in NCAA Division III and started the year 14-0 while advancing to Capital Athletic Conference championship before falling to Salisbury University. Purpura then accepted the offensive coordinator position at Queens University of Charlotte where he helped lead an offense that broke the school record for goals scored in a season while also leading them as high as #12 in the national polls for NCAA Division II. After the year, Purpura accepted the offensive coordinator at NCAA Division I VMI Keydets. After two and a half season, Purpura accepted his first head coaching position at NCAA Division III Arcadia University.

Arcadia[edit]

Purpura took over a program at Arcadia that had never had a winning record and in his first season, led the Knights to break almost all of their program records and to the conference playoffs for the first time in program history. For his efforts, he was named the 2019 MAC Commonwealth Conference Coach of the Year. In his second season, the program was on pace to break most records again and were 5-2, but the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Knights offense finished in the Top-20 nationally.

VMI[edit]

On July 6, 2020, Purpura was named Head coach at VMI. Purpura became just the second coach in the program's history to win his inaugural game joining Mike Pressler with that feat. The win was VMI's first win in 707 days.
