From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Jany Tempel (born July 8, 1969 in Berlin) is a German actress known for her work in television and for her role as the first public accuser in Germany's first #MeToo scandal targeting director Dieter Wedel.

Career[edit]

Tempel gave her acting debut with a lead role in the TV movie Der Staatsanwalt hat das Wort – Im Regen Tanzen. Over the following 20 years she appeared in more than 50 film and TV productions. In 2007 she wrote and directed her first feature film, Grosse Lügen.

Personal life[edit]

Tempel is the sister of Inka Groetschel and related to Hans-Georg Maaßen, the president of Germany's domestic security agency. Her mother Brigitte Tempel ran for the German Green Party in the 1980 Bundestag elections.[1]

Jany Tempel and #MeToo[edit]

When German director Dieter Wedel presented himself as a victim of sexual harassment during the #MeToo debate, Jany Tempel went public with her accusations of abuse against Wedel. According to German TV news reports, Tempel is the first German woman to publicly expose a prominent name in the #MeToo debate. At the end of 2017 she told her story to journalists Jana Simon and Annabel Wahba from Zeit Magazin. Published on 4 January 2018, their article Im Zwielicht (Twilight)[2] shocked the German public.[3]

Several more accusers came forward in German and international media, claiming that Wedel had sexually harassed, coerced and/or raped them. [4] The director has denied all allegations.

Among the publications backing Tempel's accusation was a second article in Zeit Magazine called Der Schattenmann (Shadow Man), in which more women including actress Esther Gemsch spoke up.[5]

Renowned German politicians and celebrities commented positively on Tempel's initiative. Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed appreciation for the country's #MeToo movement during her 2018 re-election campaign.[6] German broadcasters such as ARD established company-wide complaints offices for sexual harassment claims.[7]

On January 22, 2018, the Munich prosecutor confirmed that a preliminary investigation against the initial sentence of a sexual offence was introduced.[8] Tempel is represented by defense lawyer Alexander Stevens.

In June 2018, the research team of Zeit magazine received the Leuchtturm award for outstanding journalistic achievement.[9]
