Jean-Marie Toulgouat

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Jean-Marie Toulgouat (15 September 1927 to 10 January 2006) was a French painter. His grandfather was the American impressionist painter Theodore Earl Butler and his grandmother was Suzanne Hoschedé, step-daughter of Claude Monet. He was born in the Normandy village of Giverny nine months after the death of Monet, who was his step-great-grandfather.

After training as an architect in Nice, and practising for a number of years in Paris, in 1966 Toulgouat returned to Giverny to become a full-time artist. Having known Monet's gardens at Giverny as a boy, he was well placed to assist in their restoration, a project which began in the early 1970s.

He enjoyed some success as a painter, exhibited his works in France, Britain, The Netherlands and the United States. When he died in 2006 he was described as having been 'the last remaining link with Claude Monet at Giverny'.
