Jean-Noël Kanguma Senga was a Congolese singer-songwriter and author. He wrote and sang many songs, his most well known album being 'Sacrifice' and one of his most known song being 'Bomoko'. He was known for being very opinionated, well respected and quite controversial on many issues, as well as kind-natured and caring, regularly supporting and comforting whoever he could.

Early life and Education[edit]

Born 24th December 1955 in Mukedi, Bandundu, Jean-Noël was one of many children in a large family, his parents being Jacques Kanguma and Ernestine Ngombe, also born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which was then known as Belgian Congo as it was a Belgian Colony between 1908 and 1960. Being Christians, they raised their son with a Christian upbringing which Jean-Noël lived his whole life by.

He completed his primary and secondary education at Mukedi, among Mennonites and he graduated from state school in 1974. He then began his first career in teaching at a primary school and a year later, became the head teacher, though very young. He took on this responsibility and others that the role held for a few years with great success.

Subsequently, he chose to continue his studies at ISP Kikwit where he spent only three months doing linguistic studies. Becoming increasingly aware of his talent, he decided to leave and come to the capital, Kinshasa where he acquired an inscription at the National Institute of Arts. Being noticeably talented and bright, the professors and academic authorities recommended him to Tabu Ley, who was a leading African rumba singer-songwriter. Despite this, Jean-Noël's Christian faith caused him to not be able to engage with this type of music as it went against his Christian convictions.

Career[edit]

After his university studies, he both taught and held many positions in Mennonite schools in Kinshasa. At the same time, he was able to begin a remarkable and inspiring music career. He began his musical career in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in 2000, continued it in Great Britain. His music was generally described as being melodious, joyous and very relaxing. He composed many songs and was regularly invited to perform at concerts and other events, as well as featuring in other music videos made by other Christian singers. He also sang with other well known Congolese singers such as Charles Mombaya, Runo Moyo, David N'Tumba and many others.

He was known to be a great reference in the Democratic Republic of Congo with songs that not only caused him to be popular but also the given titles of the songs which enhanced many debates and discussions in the academic circles of the institutes of fine arts. This proved him very controversial and firm in his beliefs and what he stood for. In 2000, he left Africa and came to the United Kingdom where he learnt English and did a lot of research on the ' Bible, then publishing two books of which are titled 'Solution au changement du climat?' in which he gives a view that God gave a solution to climate change before creation and 'Nous ne comprenons pas que nous n’avons pas compris!' where he talks about getting into religion. He spent the rest of his life residing in England where he continued performing at concerts, churches and various events as well as his own events and composing more songs. He was married with five children before coming to Great Britain.

Death[edit]

Known for always putting others first and being of great comfort to many, he attended a mourning service where he sang and gave a message of hope to people reinforced by his song 'Liwa eza liwa te'. Upon returning to his seat shortly after, he died quietly. He died of a heart attack.
