Jennifer A. Wagman, Ph.D., MHS is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health, Department of Medicine and Associate Director of UCSD's Center on Gender Equity & Health. Dr. Wagman is also the Director of Violence Prevention Research and Community Engagement for the UC Global Health Institute's Women's Health, Gender, & Empowerment Center of Expertise; and a junior faculty member with Boston University's URBAN ARCH which is a member of the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) Consortiums for HIV/AIDS and Alcohol Research Translation.

Background[edit]

Dr. Wagman earned her PH.D. in Reproductive, Perinatal & Women's Health and her Master's degree of Health Science from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her postdoctoral training in substance use, HIV, and related infections, was completed at the University of California, San Diego.

Research[edit]

Dr. Wagman's research spans 5 overlapping domains of focus:

  1. Quantitative and qualitative research on violence against women (VAW), reproductive health and rights and risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI).
  2. The epidemiology of intimate partner violence (IPV) and its relationship with HIV infection, STIs and alcohol and substance use[1] in global, resource poor settings.
  3. Implementation science to adapt assess and scale-up evidence-based interventions for global prevention of HIV infection[2], IPV and alcohol and substance use problems.
  4. Social disparities research to increase health services access and prevent STIs and violence among pregnant women in the U.S. who are uninsured, undocumented, low-income and/or substance users.
  5. Research on sexual assault, sexual harassment and dating violence among college students in the U.S. and globally.
