Gerald (Jerry) L. Maatman, Jr. (born April 21, 1956) is an American amateur senior golfer and a Partner of Seyfarth Shaw LLP[1], a leading national employment and labor law firm. Maatman earned his B.A. from Washington & Lee University in 1978, and his J.D. from Northwestern University Law School in 1981. His career in law is quite accomplished. Maatman has been selected as one of the top five employment attorneys in the United States by Law360[2], and as the leading class action defense lawyer in the USA by Legal Who’s Who. Maatman’s legal work has recently been profiled in the Wall Street Journal[3], Forbes[4], Time Magazine, Bloomberg[5], Law360[6], SHRM[7], POLITICO[8], The National Law Journal[9], and Reuters[10]. He has also authored six books on employment law. Maatman is often consulted for legal opinions by major news sources, having served as a commentator on PBS, NPR[11], MSNBC[12], and USA Talk Radio.

Maatman has played in amateur golf tournaments since age 9. He won the prestigious Chick Evans Junior in 1974 as a high schooler. In college at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, he finished third and fifth respectively in the NCAA Golf Championships, was selected as All-Virginia in golf four times, and was named Golfer of the Year twice in the Old Dominion Conference (ODAC). He won the ODAC Golf Championship in 1978. He also was honored as First Team All American in golf in 1977 and again in 1978[13]. As a result of his collegiate golf career, he was inducted into the Washington & Lee Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.

Maatman has played competitive amateur gold throughout the world, and has competed in various national championships, including 5 times in the British Amateur, 3 times in the U.S. Mid-Amateur[14], 3 times in the Scottish Amateur, and 2 times in the U.S. Amateur. He also has advanced through U.S. Open Local Qualifying twice into U.S. Open Sectional qualifiers, and missed qualifying for the 1995 U.S. Open[15] by 2 shots. Maatman also has competed in many top level amateur events such as the St. Andrews Links Trophy, the Lytham Trophy, the Western Amateur[16], the Northeast Amateur, the Cardinal Amateur, the Porter Cup, the Rice Planters Invitational, the Eastern Amateur, the Southern Amateur, the Monroe Invitational, the Middle Atlantic Amateur, the Southeastern Amateur, and the North & South Amateur.

In 2003, Adam Barr of the Golf Channel called Maatman: “a prominent Chicago lawyer who also happens to be one of the finest amateur golfers in Illinois.”[17] He won the 2003 CDGA Mid-Amateur, and has been selected to the Illinois Team 8 times in the Illinois-Wisconsin Cup Matches, which is indicative of being considered one of the best twelve mid-amateurs in Illinois. He has also been a member of Chicago District Golf Association Radix Cup team 5 times, which is indicative of being considered one of the ten best amateurs in Illinois.

In 1993, Maatman was honored as Chicago District Golf Association Player-of-the-Year Runner-up (based on his second place finish in season points standings for the geographic region including Illinois, and parts of Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan – based on play in CDGA and national amateur tournaments)
