Jiří Fukač (15 January 1936 Znojmo – 22 November 2002 Brno) was a Czech musicologist, university professor, music organizer and popularizer.
Jiří Fukač was born into an art-loving family. His father Josef was an amateur musician and painter, and his mother Anděla was a pianist and music teacher. From his early years he performed in public as a pianist, and occasionally as a conductor or choirmaster.
He studied musicology at Masaryk University, where his main teachers were Jan Racek and Bohumír Štědroň. In 1958, he married his classmate Jitka (née Kupčíková), a future prominent music editor and writer from Brno. From the time he was a student (he graduated in 1959, and received his doctorate in 1967) he published articles in such newspapers as Mladá fronta and Rovnost and became the editor of the university magazine U (1961). Later, he started working as an Assistant Professor in the Musicology Department at the renamed, Jan Evangelista Purkyně University (1961), where he contributed to the establishment of the International Musicology Colloquium. From 1963–1967, he worked in the Association of Czechoslovak Composers, founded the monthly music journal, Opus musicum, and became its first chief editor (1969–1970). After the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in1968, his teaching and publishing activities were restricted and it was not until the political changes in November 1989 that he rejoined the organizational and scientific structures of Masaryk University (Scientific Council of the Faculty of Arts, Academic Senate of the Faculty of Science) . From 1998 to 2001 he worked as the Vice-Rector for Foreign Relations. As a part of his rehabilitation, he was appointed Associate Professor (1990), Candidate of Sciences (1991) and Professor (1994).
With his teaching and his professional and personal approach, he fundamentally influenced several musicological generations in Brno, and thanks to his contacts with a number of European musicological centers, Brno's musicology became well-known internationally. Fukač was also active as a public musicologist: in addition to writing numerous music reviews, he also appeared also in several television programs after 1989. He founded and co-founded a number of seminars, conferences, congresses, and festivals, including the regular autumn Brno music festivals and musicological colloquia. He was also active in a number of musical organizations (Union of Czechoslovak Composers, Association of Music Artists and Scientists, co-founder of the Czech Music Council, chairman of the International Leoš Janáčka Society etc.). He received a number of awards for his diverse activities: Czech Music Fund Award (1992), Masaryk University Rector's Award (1998, Award for Czech-German Understanding (1998), Jubilee Janáček Medal in Memoriam (2004). In addition to his genial, welcoming personality and great wit, Fukač was a leading Czech intellectual, known for his thoughtful, original and wide-ranging work in aesthetics and pedagogy in such books as Mytus a skutečnost hudby (Myth and Reality in Music), 1989, and Hudební estetika jako konkretizace obecné estetiky a muzikologická disciplína (Musical aesthetics as a concretization of general aesthetics and the discipline of musicology) 2014. His magnum opus is the impressive, quirky, magisterial and brilliant thousand-page Slovník české hudební kultury (Dictionary of Czech Musical Culture) published in 1997. Fukač died the 22nd November 2002 and is buried at the Central Cemetery in Brno.
