Jim Kim (born May 17, 1978) is an American venture capitalist. He is a founding member and general partner of San Francisco-based venture capital firm Builders VC. Prior to Builders, Jim founded venture capital firm Formation 8[1] and previously worked at Khosla Ventures and was the founder of GE Financial Services.[2]

Early life and education[edit]

Jim Kim grew up in Wappingers Falls, NY and attended John Jay High School. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000 with undergraduate degrees in computer science, electrical engineering, and political science. Kim received Master's degrees in Quantitative Methods and Business Administration from Columbia University in 2003 and 2004, respectively.

Career[edit]

Prior to his investment career, Jim worked at GE where he initially focused on strategy and renewable power project financings. He then founded the GE Ventures initiative and led investments in companies like China High Speed Transmission and battery maker A123 Systems.[3]

Khosla Ventures[edit]

In 2009, Kim joined Khosla Ventures as a general partner.[4] Kim raised $1Bn alongside Vinod Khosla [5] before departing the firm several months later for unknown reasons. [6]

Formation 8[edit]

Kim founded Formation 8[7] along with Joe Londsdale and Brian Koo in 2011. The firm split in 2015.[8]

Builders VC[edit]

In 2016, Kim founded Builders VC.[9] The firm raised $175 million for its first first fund. Significant investments included companies such as Carbon Health, Checkerspot, Bowery Valuation,[10] Foresight , Notable Labs, SafeAI among many others.[11] Kim's focus at Builders is the modernization of antiquated industries. .[12]

The firm announced its second fund for $250 million in 2022.

Board Positions[edit]

Kim serves on the boards of directors of Notable Labs, Bolt Threads, Native Microbials and Fieldwire, which was recently acquired by Hilti Corporation.[13]
