Joe O'Connor (journalist)

Joe O'Connor is a five-time Emmy Award-winning journalist and current president and CEO of WFAE, in Charlotte, North Carolina, and WFHE, in Hickory, North Carolina. O'Connor is also a member of NPR's board of directors.[1][2]

Background[edit]

O’Connor grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland. His father served in the United States army for 33 years and during in military career he became a colonel. Because O’Connor lived in a suburb of Washington D.C and witnessed impactful events in American history such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. heavily impacted him to pursue journalism.[2]

Education[edit]

O’Connor interned at the alternative acid rock station WMAL FM as a student in Georgetown. His first job out of college was as a video journalist at CNN. Eventually he joined ABC News and worked as radio news writer, a producer for Good Morning America, Nightline, and PrimeTime Live. O’Connor was also senior producer for Peter Jennings at World News Tonight in 1994. He worked at ABC News for 22 years.[3]

He received a DuPont-Columbia award for coverage of the Iraq War. He shared two Peabody Awards for coverage of 9/11 and for Nightline. O’Connor was the general manager of Rhode Island Public Radio. O’Connor led a $4 million capital campaign from 2007 to 2009. During O’Connor's leadership, WFAE launched various podcasts, such as She Says with host Sarah Delia, Amplifier with host Joni Deutsch, SouthBound with Tommy Tomlinson and FAQ City with host Nick de la Canal.[1]
