Education[edit]

Werner was born and educated in the United States, having attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for his undergraduate degree in Finance and attaining his MBA from Stanford University Graduate School of Business.[1] He started worked at Goldman Sachs as an investment banker, and was an associate at the private equity firm Frontenac[3]. Werner also was a portfolio manager at Plural Investments, Sandelman Partners where he managed long/short European equity strategy [4] and also worked at Farallon and ChinaRock. [5]

He hosted a discussion with the Stanford Club of Hong Kong on 6 December 2017 titled "How to start a hedge fund"[6]

Solitude Capital Management[edit]

Solitude Capital Management main investors include endowments, family offices, foundations and pension funds with most positions in India and China. SCM focuses on small to mid cap investment of somewhere between US$500mn - US$5bn. He noted that the weak rupee was acting as a drag on SCM investments, though because they are targeting high return companies, weaker currency isn't as big an issue[4].

Controversy[edit]

Werner created a video intended for friends which became viral[7]. In the video, he was seen to be licking his hands and then wiping on a train handle in Hong Kong's MTR. [2] This took place during the global Coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, which had made many people nervous about public spaces. He later apologised for what he described as a "parody"[8]. According to comments he released after the video went viral, he claimed to have used hand santiser before and after touching the pole, although this was not clear from the video.[9]

In response to this, the MTR corporation in an email statement to Reuters said that “These acts, which ignore public morality, run counter to Hong Kong society’s determination to fight the epidemic”[10]

Personal Life[edit]

Werner is married with kids[11].
