John Douglas Cates Jr. (born October 23, 1936, Montgomery, AL) is an Alabama attorney and former Montgomery County (AL) Assistant District Attorney. Cates was a candidate in the 1984 election for District Court Judge of the Alabama 15th Judicial Circuit. Cates transitioned to private practice after serving as ADA, and still practices as such today. Cates is a lifelong resident of Montgomery, Alabama, and married his wife Betty A. Cates in 1962. Cates has two children, Laurie Lane Cates-Sikes and John Braddock Cates.
