John E. James (born 1983) is a businessman, Army veteran, and the Republican Party nominee for the 2018 U.S. Senate election in Michigan.[1][2] He is African American and grew up outside Detroit.[3] He is a graduate of West Point and served in the U.S. Army for 8 years. He attained the rank of Captain and flew Apache helicopters. He served in Iraq and was a platoon commander.[4][3] James is President of James Group International, a family of supply chain services companies based in Detroit, Michigan.[5] In the 2018 Republican primary James received his party's nomination with 54.67% of the vote defeating rival candidate Sandy Pensler.[6] He is the first African American Republican to run for statewide office in Michigan.[7]
Early life and education[edit]
James is the son of John A. James, a native of Starkville, Mississippi who founded James Group International and serves as its chairman and CEO. James grew up outside Detroit.[3] He graduated from West Point in 2004 where he earned a bachelor's degree in Law an Systems (Industrial Engineering). Upon graduation he went on to become an Army Aviation officer in the U.S. army. On completion of Ranger School James served in Operation Iraqi Freedom where he flew Apache helicopters as a platoon commander and earned a Combat Action Badge.[4][8]
James has an M.B.A from the University of Michigan and a Masters of Supply Chain Management and Information Systems from Penn State University.[9]
James serves on the board of a charter elementary school founded by basketball player Jalen Rose.[10]
2018 Senate Campaign[edit]
On September 21 2017, James announced his candidacy for the Unites States senate seat in Michigan currently held by Debbie Stabenow. James made his announcement by a Facebook video posted on his profile.[11] President Donald Trump endorsed James and called him the "future star" of the GOP.[12][13] James also received endorsements from U.S. Senator Marco Rubio and Detroit native Kid Rock.[14] James is pro-life and supports the 2nd amendment.[14]
James called for six debates with Stabenow and she agreed to two.[15][16]
