John Kobs (born October 24, 1980) is an American Internet entrepreneur. Kobs is co-founder and CEO of online rental marketplace Apartment List.[1]

Early Life John Kobs was born and raised in Granger Township, Ohio. He is the son of Judith Schutter and John Douglas Kobs. Kobs graduated from Highland High School in Medina, Ohio in 1999. Kobs is an eagle scout.

Education Kobs is an alumnus of Case Western Reserve University, graduating with his Bachelor of Science in Business Management with a concentration in Finance in 2003. Kobs played football and ran indoor and outdoor track for the CWRU Spartans. He was all conference football player in 2000 and 2001. He was awarded the John Anderson award for most valuable underclassman in 2000.

Career After college, Kobs spent the majority of his early professional life in New York City working in finance and investment banking for five years before departing to start his own business.[2]

In 2008, Kobs founded Vertical Brands Labs. From 2008 to 2011, this internal incubator designed experiences to help consumers make life’s important decisions, like finding a home and buying a car.

In 2011, Kobs launched Apartment List, a platform that connects renters with apartment listings through an online marketplace, at Techcrunch Disrupt in San Francisco.[3]From 2011 to 2013, Apartment List partnered with other online rental companies to provide a meta search experience where a user could search a number of sites simultaneously.[4]

In 2014, Apartment List decided to change to the current ‘pay-per-move-in,’ success-based model to focus the experience on the renter.

Apartment List has had three significant series of fundraising efforts.[5] In November 2013 Series A funding raised $23 million, with lead investor Matrix Partners. [6] Series B funding in November 2016 raised $30 million, with lead investor Canaan Partners, [7] and Series C funding raised $50 million with Passport Capital in November 2017. [8] The last round of funding is being used to increase the property listings in smaller buildings and single-family homes. [9]

Other Projects Kobs is the Chairman and co-founder of Auto List, Inc., an automobile marketplace.[10]
