John Redmann is an American writer and television producer, residing in Los Angeles, California.

Redman most recently served as executive producer and writer for ten seasons of the CBS talk show, The Talk. He has also served in a variety of producing and writing capacities for numerous other talk shows, including The Tyra Banks Show, True Beauty, The Tony Danza Show, The Wayne Brady Show, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, Leeza, Ricki Lake, The Queen Latifah Show, and The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show.[1]

Most recently, Redmann was represented by Jonathan Moonves of Del, Shaw, Moonves, Tanaka, Finkelstein, & Lezcano in Los Angeles, California.[2]

Career[edit]

From a young age, Redman had always wanted to be a part of talk shows, noting an interest in The Phil Donahue Show and Sally, rather than cartoons.[3] He received his first opportunity when he joined the production team of the syndicated talk show Ricki Lake, which ran from September 13, 1993 until August 27, 2004.[4] In a format hosting guests and taking questions and comments from a studio audience, the show carved out a unique market niche in targeting teenagers, young adults, college students, and urban viewers. Topics often involved parenting skills, LGBTQIA+ issues, interracial relationships, family discord, revealing secrets, and other social topics.

Redmann then served as an associate producer on the NBC and syndicated daytime television talk show Leeza, which ran from January 17, 1994 until September 8, 2000. Hosted by Leeza Gibbons, the show often focused on current events, crime, and celebrity stories. The show received 27 nominations and won three Daytime Emmy Awards.

Following the success of Leeza, Redmann served as a segment producer on episode #1.25 of The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show in 1997. Hosted by In Living Color alum Keenan Ivory Wayans, the episode featured interviews with Carmen Electra, Jesse Jackson, and Kerri Strug.

Redmann then joined the production team of The Queen Latifah Show, which ran from September 13, 1999 until August 31, 2001. Hosted by Dana Elaine Owens (aka Queen Latifah), the series was described as the “Dear Abby for the Hip-Hop Generation,” and covered various topics and interviews with celebrities and others.[5]

From his experience in hip hop television production, Redmann went on to join The Rosie O’Donnell Show as supervising producer. Running from June 10, 1996 until May 22, 2002, the daytime variety television talk show was overseen by Rosie O’Donnell. Under Redmann’s production of 120 episodes between 1998 and 2002, the show won four Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Talk Show.

Entering the new millennium, Redmann then joined The Wayne Brady Show on ABC as executive producer. Capitalizing on the height of comedian Wayne Brady’s fame from his stint on the comedy improv show Who’s Line Is It Anyway?, Redmann helped lead the show to earn four Daytime Emmy Awards in its first season, including Outstanding Talk Show and Outstanding Talk Show Host, and receive six Emmy nominations and one Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host in its second season.

Redmann then took a brief hiatus from talk show production to executive produce the TV movie documentary Contact: Talking to the Dead for ABC in 2002. Hosted by Jim Moret, the 60-minute primetime special connected psychic medium George Anderson with a series of celebrities to attempt to make contact with deceased loved ones.[6]

Returning to daytime variety talk shows, Redmann then Executive Produced 160 episodes of The Tony Danza Show between September 13, 2004 and May 26, 2006. Hosted by Tony Danza, famous for his roles in the TV series Taxi and Who’s the Boss?, the series was distributed by Buena Vista Television and was marked by the popular episode featuring a heavy metal band, The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza, and a 2005 go-kart race with NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace.

Redmann seized his next industry opportunity when he became the executive producer of The Tyra Banks Show. The show was hosted by Tyra Banks, famous for her modeling career in GQ, Sports Illustrated, and Victoria’s Secret, as well as roles in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and several movies. Redmann produced 146 episodes of the series, appearing in episode #4.20 alongside Wayne Brady and Brooke Hogan. The show often had a sensationalized focus on current issues facing women, and later took on a tabloid format that covered topics such as people with odd psychological problems. Throughout its run, The Tyra Banks Show won two Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Informative Talk Show.

Having built a strong relationship with host Tyra Banks, John would go on to create and serve as executive consultant on ABC’s True Beauty. Produced by Tyra Banks and Ashton Kutcher, the television series premiered on January 5, 2009 and featured a panel of three judges reviewing contestants on their inner beauty and appearance for a cash prize of $100,000.

The most well-known chapter of Redmann’s career is his ten-year involvement in the American talk show, The Talk. Debuting on October 18, 2010, The Talk has earned 51 nominations and 11 Daytime Emmy Awards, The People’s Choice Award for Favorite Daytime TV Hosting Team, and the Image Award from the NAACP for Best Talk Series. Redmann served as executive producer for 955 episodes and writer for 499 episodes of the show. The CBS talk show covers the latest headlines, current events, and human-interest stories with a revolving, engaging panel of co-hosts, including Sharon Osbourne, Sheryl Underwood, Marie Osmond, Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Aisha Tyler, Eve, Carrie Ann Inaba, Marissa Jaret Winokur, and Holly Robinson Peete.

Redmann announced on August 14, 2020 that he would be leaving The Talk. “2020 has been a year of reflection for all of us,” Redmann said. “While I have enjoyed every moment at The Talk, I realized over these past few months that the time has come for me to make a change. I launched The Talk 10 years ago and have been so proud to have built a long-running and successful show. After 10 career Emmys and 10 award-winning seasons of this show, I am excited to start a new chapter.”[7]
