Josephine Ahikire, born in Mbarara, Uganda, is Professor and Dean of the School of Women and Gender Studies at the Makerere University of Kampala. Her work is related to the Feminist theory, Gender and Politics and Cultural Studies.[1]

Her book Localised or Localised Democracy: Gender and the Politics of Decentralisation in Uganda develops a theory about the crucial role that plays the State regarding feminist policies. She deals with the necessity for development programmes to require more attention and articulation to the women’s needs, highlighting a poor representation of women in the local government and decision-making bodies that limits women's influence in participatory rural development programmes.

Other current researchs of her are dedicated to the study of Gender and Citizenship, in reference to social citizenship and livelihoods, women’s land rights and women’s strategic presence and political settlement.

She is also currently running a collaborative project with the University of Manchester about Gender and political settlement.

Prof. Ahikire is Associate member of the African Gender Institute (AGI) and Associate Member of the Council for Development of Social Research in Africa[2]. Josephine Ahikire is also member of the Uganda Women’s Movement, the Council for Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA)[3] and the African Gender Institute (AGI) of the University of Cape Town.
