Joshua Abelow (b. 1976 in Frederick, Maryland, USA) is an artist, writer, and curator based in Harris, New York and New York City. His work has been publicly exhibited since 2002.

Education[edit]

Abelow received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1998. From 1999 - 2006, jr lived in New York, working as a studio assistant and manager to painter Ross Bleckner. During this period, Abelow's studio was located inside the site of the former Mudd Club at 77 White St. He received his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2008. In 2009, Abelow spent six weeks at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Alberta, Canada.

Work[edit]

Abelow's studio practice is rooted in geometric abstraction and self-referential, cartoonish line drawing. Abelow's work includes a range of 21st century art-historical nods, often combining nods to early 21st century figuration with Post-painterly abstraction. In 2012, James Fuentes Gallery presented a solo booth of Abelow's work at the first iteration of Frieze New York on Randall's Island.

His work has been exhibited in several International cities including Toronto, Brussels, Milan, São Paulo, Palma de Mallorca, Guadalajara, Istanbul, Tokyo, London, Prague, Shanghai, and Berlin. The artist has several published books, some of which are represented in the permanent collection of museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Metropolitan Museum of Art.[1] Abelow is recognized for his unique position as a contemporary painter who embraces other mediums of expression such as blogging, curating, and creative writing.[2]

Blog[edit]

Abelow created Art Blog Art Blog (ABAB), hailed as “one of the great art publications of the 2000s,”[3] as a visual radio show that incorporated both contemporary happenings and art historical references. For exactly five years, ABAB was an influential voice in the New York art world, seen as “an almost preternaturally dependable source of news about shows in New York and further afield, particularly in artist-run and fly-by-night spaces. There was a thrill in visiting,” writes art critic Andrew Russeth, “knowing that you would, without a doubt, come across a new show, a new artist, something you hadn’t heard of.”[4] The blog also operated as a temporary gallery and printed publication. In 2016, the blog was exhibited as an artwork alongside paintings at James Fuentes, New York as well as Tif Sigfrids, Los Angeles. The artwork is now permanently housed at Los Angeles Contemporary Archive in Los Angeles, California.

Curatorial Project[edit]

Since 2010, curating has been an important addition to his work.. In 2014, Abelow started Freddy, which has presented important and historical exhibitions by artists including Puppies Puppies, Amy Feldman, Suzanne Blank Redstone, Albert Mertz, Thornton Willis, and Rafael Ferrer, . The gallery was founded in Baltimore, Maryland, but in 2016 it was relocated to a renovated church in Harris, New York.[5]
