Juan Foo[edit]

Juan Foo is a Singaporean Filmmaker and Producer. He has been involved in the film industry since 1995.[1]. He specialises in producing, which includes financing projects and developing content for the market[2]. Foo also engages in training younger filmmakers through conducting teaching and sharing sessions and lecturing on platforms such as Objectif Films: The Singapore Film Lecture Series[3]. He has also acted as the moderator for various film events[4].

Background[edit]

Foo started off working freelance as a grip, camera assistant and video editor for various film projects. He also read scripts and assisted in distribution for NDF, a film finance company. Juan was also trained in traditional cel animation at Yoyogi Animation Gakuin and worked for Japanese animation company Anime International Company.

From 2008 to 2010, Foo furthered his film studies at Chapman University where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Creative Producing[1]. Concurrently, he obtained a Professional Diploma in Creative Entrepreneurship[1] at NUS.

His background in creative development translates to him being a strong advocate for focusing on storytelling and cultivating films[5]. His experience also puts him in a unique position to be on the jury for short films in competitions such as ciNE65[6], Crowbar 2008[7] and NUS Point & Shoot[8].

Career[edit]

Currently, Foo is a producer with Taipan Films where he focuses on developing content and business deals for upcoming screen projects[9]. Most recently, he was the producer for Singapore’s first monster feature film Circle Line[10].

From 2014 to 2016, Foo was head of NTUC’s U Creative Programme[11]. Foo was in charge of organising outreach and engagement events for the Creative media industry such as U Creative Summit, U Creative Series and U Creative Mentorship. He also spoke at industry events such as U Creative, Six Degrees: Meet and Mingle Event[12] and General Assembly meets SGAG[13].

In 2011 to 2013, Foo was the Assistant Director under the Talent Development Division and The Assessment Group for Singapore’s Media Development Authority[1].

In 2010 to 2011, Foo was Director of Business Development at Shooting Gallery Asia[1].

From 2009 to 2010, Foo was the Media CET Project Head for the Singapore Workforce Development Agency and he was responsible for overseeing and setting up talent development projects such as the Singapore Media Academy[1].

From 2006 to 2008, Foo was the Executive Producer for Shooting Gallery Motion Pictures and he was active in business development and content development; constantly mining concepts and opportunities that are entertaining, engaging and economically viable[1]. His script projects were awarded the Script Development Grant. Foo was also responsible for “scouting and watching short films for Objectifs Films from local and regional student or professional filmmakers”[1].

In 2002, together with Hong Kong partners, Juan ran production company Ground Glass Images which produced “Dirty Laundry”, “Hainan Chicken Rice”[14] and “Perth”[15]
