Junoon, the carnival of spirit, is a two day long sporting extravaganza organized yearly by NSS BITS Pilani for the children with special abilities. With the vision to look on specially abled as unique attributes that can become powerful assets if given the right opportunity, Junoon celebrates the spirit of life. Knowing the fact that disability is no tragedy, this festival admire the aspirations of young minds with different abilities. It is during this occasion that they break all the possible barriers their impairments has imposed on them and show that the Junoon (passion) they have in their hearts is no lesser than that of any other human being. Along with various recreational and cultural activities, this sporting event help the specially abled to unleash their inner talent and reminds that even in being different, all are same and no superficial barrier can restrict the soul from achieving its dreams.

History[edit]

With an aim to propel specially abled, lesser privileged youth of the country, making them showcase their amazing talent and feel more accepted in the society, JUNOON was started in the year 2012 with 100 participants from 5 different NGOs. Since then, 6 successful editions of Junoon have been organized with the 6th edition being recently conducted on 16-17th September 2017.

Various Activities[edit]

A) Recreational Activities[edit]

Being a two day long extravaganza, various recreational activities like campus tour, visits to the Birla museum- India’s first technological museum and alluring Sarasvati temple are arranged for the participants. Besides this, various fun activities like hoopla, carom, tug of war, art workshops, DJ corner and many more make the event more enjoyable.

B) Sporting Events[edit]

Wide range of sport activities are organized each year during Junoon in collaboration with the sports council of BITS Pilani that aims at inculcating competitiveness, team spirit and other leadership qualities among the specially abled. Various athletic events like races (50m, 100m and relay), standing jump, shot put and games like bocce, badminton and special edition of volleyball, basketball, cricket and hockey were conducted during the 6TH edition of Junoon.

C) Cultural Extravaganza[edit]

Apart from number of enticing recreational and sporting activities encompassing Junoon, a unique cultural extravaganza- Junoon night along with the valedictory ceremony add up to its glory. It includes series of dance, singing and other cultural performances from the NGOs participating in Junoon.

Chief Guest[edit]

Since its very beginning Junoon has a rich history of witnessing prominent personalities as chief guests. Satendra Singh, a noted disability activist well known for his sustained efforts in making public places accessible for disabled persons; Amit Saroha, Paralympian and Arujuna Awardee; Malathi Holla, an international athlete and the recipient of Arjuna and Padma shri award; to name a few. Recently, 6th edition of Junoon was graced by the presence of Dr. Anand Kumar, an acclaimed international para-athelete as a chief guest.

Participation[edit]

Specially abled, the heart of the event along with their mentors from various NGOs of Jaipur, Delhi and nearby areas of Pilani participate in large number every year. 6th edition of Junoon saw the participation 114 specially abled kids along with 25 mentors from 7 different NGOs viz Akshay Pratishthan, a Delhi based school for specially challenged children; Deepalaya, a social service organization, Delhi ; Disha, a resource center for multiple disabilities, Jaipur; Manovikas, a charitable society, Delhi; Amla Birla Kendra (ABK), Pilani ; Pandit Chittarmal and Tapovan, Shriganganagar.

Junoon 2012[edit]

Junoon was started in the year 2012 with 100 participants from 5 different NGOs namely Umang, Muskaan, Amla Birla Kendra, Akshay Pratishthan and Asha Ka Jharna.It was inaugurated by B.N Jain, the then vice chancellor or Bits Pilani, Pilani, Rajasthan.

Junoon 2013[edit]

The second edition, Junoon 2013 was bigger and better than the inaugural Junoon of 2012. It saw a participation of over 170 children from 9 NGOs of Pilani, Delhi and Jaipur that included Umang (Jaipur), Muskaan (Delhi), Akshay Pratishthan (Chirawa), Amla Birla Kendra (Pilani), Asha ka Jharna (Pilani), Shri Nirmal Vivek, Disha (Rajasthan). It was inaugurated by Prof. G. Raghurama, the then director of BITS Pilani. There were numerous sporting events like Cricket, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton and many more. The cultural evening, “Junoon Nite” was organized with the various NGOs showcasing their abilities in the form of dance or small acts.

Junoon 2014 (6 -7th September)[edit]

Over 170 children participated in third edition, Junoon 2014 from 9 NGOs namely Aarth Astha(New Delhi), Amla Birla Kendra (Pilani), Akshay Pratisthan (Jhunjhunu), Asha Ka Jharna (Jhunjhunu and Sikar), Disha (Delhi), HCRA (New Delhi), Muskaan(New Delhi) , Navjyoti(New Delhi) among others , all fighting for sporting glory. The event was inaugurated by Satendra Singh, a noted disability activist well known for his sustained efforts in making public places accessible for disabled persons. There were numerous sporting events like Cricket, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton and various others. Unified BOCCEE in association with the ESPN, a major sports channel in India was the highlight of the event.

Junoon 2015 (29-30th August)[edit]

The fourth edition, Junoon2015 was inaugurated by Amit Kumar Saroha, Paralympian and Arujuna Awardee. Event witnessed the participation of over 130 children from 9 NGOs namely Special Bharat olympics, Muskan(Delhi), Disha(Delhi), Deepalaya, Amla Birla Kendra(Pilani), Sambal Seva, Manovikas, Nidan, Koshish. Besides cultural evening “Junoon Nite” and various sporting events, special event called floor hockey was also conducted during Junoon 2015.

Junoon 2016 (10-11th September)[edit]

The fifth edition, Junoon 2016 saw the participation of 120 children from 6 NGOs of Jhunjhunu, Delhi and Jaipur which were Akshay pratisthan (Jhunjhunu),Disha (Jaipur), Deepalaya (Delhi), Manovikas (Jaipur), Asha ka jharna (Nawalghar), Special Olympics Bharat – Rajasthan. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Malathi K. Holla, an international athlete and the recipient of Arjuna and Padma shri award.
