Just One Giant Lab
Just One Giant Lab (JOGL) is a non-profit research and innovation laboratory facilitating open, inclusive and collaborative science and innovation.[1]. It is a platform where users can collaborate to solve global problems, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and to develop solutions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined by the United Nations. Thomas Landrain, Leo Blondel, and Marc Santolini founded the organization in 2017 in Paris, France, and today (July 2020), the network promotes collaboration between more than 4,500 users working on more than 200 projects. JOGL's partners include academic labs, startups, companies, NGOs, foundations, and public services[1].
OpenCovid19 Initiative[edit]
JOGL’s most popular program has been the OpenCovid19 Initiative, a global open science coalition of individuals from a variety of backgrounds[2] that are creating open-source solutions, such as cheap and accessible coronavirus tests[3][4], and DIY open hardware, including ventilators, to address the Covid-19 pandemic.
The initiative is organized in a set of challenges that address topics such as: COVID-19 treatment and therapeutics, diagnostics and environmental detection, prevention, evaluation and validation of open-source tools, and data analysis, modelling and simulations. With support from the AXA Research Fund[5], JOGL is awarding 4 rounds of micro-grants to selected projects.
iGEM (the International Genetically Engineered Machine competition) Program[edit]
JOGL's most recent program is iGEM 2020, in which iGEM teams can collaborate to solve problems that address the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by pushing the boundaries of synthetic biology
