It is a handmade product started by the Chinese families in the 1950s. The main ingredient for the Fish and Prawn Cracker is the Wolf Herring fish, or commonly known as Ikan Parang, available in the coastal area of Mukah. Mukah is one of the famous locations for producing fish crackers in Malaysia as it has fresh sea products all year round[1]. Other ingredients include tapioca flour, salt, spices, and water.

One of the earliest Keropok makers is Jen Yuan which started to brand Keropok in 1980s and commercialized it locally and within the states of Sarawak. In 2000s, the local Melanau families learned how to make Keropok and more and more families started making Keropok. There are more than 20 small-scale Keropok makers in Mukah to date.

Today, Keropok Mukah has become a popular gift for tourists as well as for occasions such as Chinese New Year, Hari Gawai, and Christmas Day.

It is different from other fish crackers such as Keropok Lekor from Terengganu and Krupuk Indonesia in terms of the texture and taste.
