Kestin Cornwall is a Canadian artist; He is a Sheridan College graduate student who creates work that explores human conditions.[1] Moreover, Cornwall is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Design at OCAD University (Ontario College of Art and Design University) in Toronto, Canada.

Early Life and Education[edit]

He was born and raised in Windsor City, Ontario. His father is from Grenada, and his mother is from the United States. He lived most of his childhood in Detroit, Michigan, with his family. He began his studies at Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning in Oakville, Ontario, in 2001. Cornwall has spent the last ten years focusing on producing timely, innovative art. Cornwall's work tries to raise issues of equality, immigration, and what it means to be a Black person in North America. Cornwall employs pictures to investigate how culture, entertainment, especially movies and other forms of media, influence public perceptions of Black people and people of colour in North America.[2]

Art and Appearances[edit]

Kestin Cornwall is a contemporary painter whose work explores and examines the relationship between art, social justice, politics, and freedom. Kestin Cornwall's artworks won the CAPIC Best In Show Award in 2006.[3] His work has primarily been shown in Canada and the United States. Kestin Cornwall had his first solo exhibition titled Jezebel in 2012 at Goodfellas Gallery, also in Toronto, among several major group shows, including exhibitions at Lee's Gallery in Los Angeles in 2010 and INDEXG Gallery, SMASH, and Tenderloin Gallery, all in Toronto. In addition, the artist took part in several initiatives, including Revival's Tribute To John Michel Basquiat event in 2004 and Yves Laroche Gallery's T.O.P Tour Life Styles Edition in 2006.[4]

As a contemporary artist, his work was exhibited in The Untitled Space show TRUE STORY at Tribeca, NY.[5][6][7] Kestin Cornwall's work is featured in The Brain Project, which is used to raise funds for Brain Health in North York.[8] Cornwall has exhibited his work internationally, along with the Affordable Art Fair, New York[9] and the Art on Paper, New York. Cornwall has also been a part of group exhibitions along with Showfields NY[10], AZART Gallery[11], Chelsea, New York, and Philadelphia-based PxP Contemporary.[12]

As for solo exhibitions, Cornwall has exhibited his work at Goodfellas Gallery[13] and Navillus Gallery[14] while making group appearances at the Black Cat Art Space Walton Fine Arts in London, England. He consistently creates works for Baycrest Foundation and The Brain Project[15] while also taking part in the Project 31 art auction.[16]

Kestin specialized in mural art; he commissioned the mural of a 5,000-square-foot Moore Park house.[17] He also appeared in an interview regarding how the cluster hire approach can work for cooperation and non-academic institutes to address racial inequalities.[18]

Critical Reception[edit]

Kestin's work evolves around unconventional models of art creation, along with traditional, figurative painting and comic style drawing to reimagine the past (of his own and of the artistic history). Cornwall's paintings are expressed as brash, pop and bold.

In 2016, a letter was sent to Cornwall involving Cornwall's Drake mural (Canadian rapper Drake); the mural was considered graffiti. The mural was deemed graffiti vandalism. The local business that authorized the artwork was demanded to remove it. Craig and Patrick Fay commissioned the mural on Croft Street's design, visual and animation effects companies wall by The Juggernaut.[19][20][21]

Awards[edit]

  1. While concluding the Art Fundamentals and Illustration programs, Cornwall had a dynamic love and focus for the arts proliferated.
