Kortnee Darnell Simmons (born June 22, 1993) is an American singer, songwriter, and actor with Dominican, Jamaican, Brazilian, African, and Native American roots. Before signing with EMPIRE, he released his debut EP Euphoria: The Live EP in 2017.[1][2] The singer has shared the stage with Chris Brown, Betty Wright, J Holiday, Mya and many more. As an actor, he is best known for his appearances in Super Dark Times, TeenNick Top 10, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and Camp Rock. He's also appeared in the Netflix Original series The Get Down alongside Jaden Smith.

Life and career[edit]

Simmons was born in Poughkeepsie, New York the son of Imogene Simmons. While he was young, he and his brothers frequently watched The Five Heartbeats – the story of the rise and fall of an African American singing group – and fell in love with music. They would spend night after night watching and memorizing the songs and dances from the movies. Kortnee's mother and estranged father were also musically talented and encouraged his interest. Though already performing in church, and throughout the community, he decided to try his hand at songwriting when he was fourteen years old. Later joining a boy band, he became the primary songwriter for the group, along with his younger brother Alex.

While honing his songwriting skills, he continued his education, graduating from Okeechobee High School in 2011; and immediately enrolling at Full Sail University for Music Production just days after graduation. However, a career in recording and performance was calling his name. In 2011, he signed with BassBox Music and recorded his first single, Tired of Down. The song was a dance pop record that illustrated the story of choosing a better option for love when you're tired of being hurt. The record did well to bring attention to his name and was featured on various blogs and websites. Due to unsavory business practices by BassBox's then CEO Kareem Garvey aka Tokeyo Bang,[3][4] Kortnee's mother made the decision that they would no longer be working with BassBox Music. Upon leaving, Kortnee received offers and attention from Slip-N-Slide Records, RCA, and Capitol Records; none of which he entertained due to his unease from his most recent experience. Finding popularity and spotlight in his music career was never an issue, partially due to his relation to music mogul Russell Simmons, a name he couldn't help but be associated with.[5][6]

Simmons is currently self managed, and releases music under his own label imprint LarkMusic through his deal with EMPIRE, a distribution company and record label founded by Ghazi Shami.[7] He's also demonstrated tremendous work for the community through his activism and support of bringing awareness to issues such as mass incarceration, racial justice, comprehensive immigration reform, and educational funding.[8][9][10][11][12] He's also very active as a member in the LGBTQ+ community.[13][14]

Film[edit]

Simmons has co-starred in several major films, including Super Dark Times (2017), as Eugene, and Daddy's Little Girls (2007), as Charlie. He also appeared in the movie High School Musical 2, which was released in 2007. His most recent appearances on screen include the Netflix Original series The Get Down (2016), The Late Show with Stephen Colbert where he appeared with Baauer and Leikeli-47 during the on air performance of "Day Ones". He's most recently wrapped on Shoplifters of the World, and Can You Keep A Secret alongside Alexandra Daddario, Tyler Hoechlin, and Laverne Cox.

Music[edit]

Simmons' first EMPIRE released single "Secrets" was released in 2018. Following the success of that release "The Real" was released the same year. He's announced the release of a full length album near the end of 2019.
