The Kota Alliance is a U.S.-based nonprofit nongovernmental 501(c)(3) organization focused on women's rights, gender equality and women's empowerment, operating out of the Women's Lab in the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) in New York City. At CSI, The Kota Alliance offers working space, desks, storage and event spaces for nonprofit organizations, social enterprises, and women-owned businesses whose global mission is to empower women and improve their lives. In the future, The Kota Alliance will reorganize and expand in order to become the World Center for Women.[1]

History[edit]

Finland has always been a pioneer and world leader when it comes to women’s rights [2][3]. The Finland Center Foundation (FCF)[4], being ambassadors of these Finnish values in the U.S., launched the Kota Alliance as an organization promoting gender equality, women's rights and women's empowerment in March 2015 in New York City.

Mission[edit]

The Mission of the Kota Alliance is to be a nonprofit social enterprise incubator in New York City, providing fiscal, physical, and programmatic support for civil society organizations and women-centered enterprises, whose work promote women's rights, increase gender equality or improve women's empowerment on the local or global level.

Activities[edit]

The Kota Alliance organizes fundraising, networking and visibility events, workshops and seminars in New York City. In addition, the organization cooperates frequently with local businesses and organizations in order to raise money for women's rights initiatives. The Kota Alliance organizes an annual event, The Kota Day. It’s latest edition - titled “Storytelling for Empowerment of Women” - took place 2 February 2018. The Kota Alliance has been participating as a host in the annual sessions (CSW60 [5], CSW61 [6], CSW62 [7]) organized by the Commission on the Status of Women of UN Women. The Kota Alliance informs about their events through their newsletters, website and social media channels.

Partner organizations[edit]

As an umbrella organization, The Kota Alliance offers her partner organizations visibility on the Kota Alliance's website, free publicity for events and campaigns through newsletters and social media, opportunities to co-host events, and free attendance to or discounts for seminars, workshops and other events. Currently The Kota Alliance has 31 partner organizations:

The World Center for Women[edit]

The long-term plan for The Kota Alliance is to have its own physical location, called The World Center for Women. The World Center for Women will be a hub for small- to medium-sized global and local civil society organizations in New York City. The Center will offer co-working and private spaces for partner organizations, conference and seminar rooms and event spaces. Hostel style lodging will also be offered to partner organizations when visiting New York for conferences and seminars. In addition, the Center will host daycare in a Scandinavian-style pre-school, a cafe-restaurant and a Finnish sauna and gym.
