Austin Kwabena Brakopowers

Austin Kwabena Brakopowers, born August 21, is a Ghanaian researcher, broadcast journalist[1], development communications practitioner, novelist and essayist whose works focus on law and everyday life, international politics[2], migration, socioeconomic matters, media and development communications.

Kwabena Brakopowers read LL.B at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) and graduated in 2021. He pursued his undergraduate degree programme at the University of Ghana where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Sociology. He went ahead to pursue his post-graduate studies at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) where he graduated with Master's of Arts Degree in Development Communications[3]

He has worked with several media houses as a journalist, including The Multimedia Group, particularly JOY 99.7 FM where he specialised in online reporting as well as documentaries from February 2016 to March 2018[4]. He has also worked with some international development organisations both in Ghana and Liberia, including Right To Play Ghana where served as the Communications Specialist there.

Brakopowers established the Accra International Book Festival with some of his friends in 2018 as a platform to project local and international creatives. Since 2018, the Accra International Book Festival[5] has hosted a number of world class poets, scientists, authors, researchers, politicians, musicians, and artists in Ghana's capital, Accra. The Afro-Book Festival is in its fifth year since its establishment.

Kwabena Brakopowers spends his time writing either in Accra, Ghana or Monrovia, Liberia where he calls his second home. He loves travelling around Ghana and Africa.


Early Life

Brakopowers, the third of six siblings, was born in Akyem Asene in the Eastern Region of Ghana, to Samuel Franklin Brako and Alice Darkwaa. His father worked in the Netherland, while his mother was a trader. A devout Presbyterian, Brakopowers has remained in the faith. He continues to participate in missionary works across Ghana.
