Leonard Anderson Jr.[1] (September 18, 1996 – September 26, 2013), known professionally as L'A Capone, was an American rapper and songwriter from South Side, Chicago, Illinois, specifically the 7200 Block of South Bennett Avenue.[2] He was known a reputed member of the 600 faction in Chicago[3], a longtime friend of American rapper Lil Durk appearing in several of his music videos[4] as well as an associate of fellow Chicago rapper Chief Keef.[5] He is described by NME as one of the pioneers of drill music[6] and is cited as an influence to multiple prominent Chicago rappers.

Early and personal life[edit]

Leonard Anderson was born on September 18th 1996 to Dedra Morris.[1] His parents divorced when he was young. His father moved from Chicago to Atlanta.

At age 8, Anderson moved to live with his father in Atlanta where he attended middle school alongside future rapper Lil Yachty.[7]

Anderson passed away before he could graduate from Sullivan High School. However, a gown and diploma were placed on his chair during the graduation ceremony as he had the required amount of credits.[1]

L'A Capone was friends with American rapper Lil Durk for 5 years.

Dedra Morris, L'A Capone's mother describes him as having a strong liking for cereal, more specifically Cinnamon Toast Crunch.[1]

Career[edit]

In March 2013, he released a single titled "So Loud" alongside a music video.[8] In January 2014, his 18-track mixtape Separate Myself was post-humously released. It was compiled by American rapper and friend of the rapper Lil Durk along with counterparts from the Only the Family record label.[9] Also in January 2014, he appeared in a documentary by WorldStarHipHop titled "The Field" which was made on the violence in Chicago.[10][11][12] In October 2019, Pitchfork cited L'A Capone and RondoNumbaNine's song "Play for Keeps" as one of the "11 Songs That Define Chicago Drill"[13] and Cleveland newspaper The Plain Dealer named the song one of the "30 greatest drill songs".[14]

Influence and legacy[edit]

In August 2019, in an interview with Power 106 American rapper Lil Tecca named L'A Capone as one of his top 5 favorite rappers.[15] In November 2021, during an interview with DJ Vlad, American rapper 600 Breezy reflected on L'A Capone's passing and his belief that the rapper would've been bigger than popular rappers such as Lil Durk, Kanye West, Young Thug, and Chief Keef if he were still alive.[16] In March 2022, late American rapper King Von's posthumous album What It Means to Be King was released and included homages and references to L'A Capone.[17] In October 2022, American rapper SleazyWorld Go cited L'A Capone as one of his longtime favorite rappers.[18]

Death[edit]

Shooting[edit]

On September 26, 2013, L'A Capone would leave a recording studio near the 7000 Block of South Stoney Island Avenue in Chicago. As he was walking through an alley, he was confronted and shot[2] in the right thigh and lower back.[4] At 8:30 P.M, on that day, he was pronounced dead at the Northwestern Hospital.[19] He did not have a gun on him when he was shot.[8] A year prior to his death, he had suffered a gunshot wound from another shooting.

Tributes[edit]

In the aftermath of the shooting, fellow rapper and friend of L'A Capone Lil Durk first sent a get-well-soon message on Twitter, quickly following the post with another tweet saying "Rip lil bro" upon the news of L'A Capone's death.[19][20] In October 2013, fellow rapper and frequent collaborator RondoNumbaNine released his track "Life of a Savage" along with an accompanying music video on WorldStarHipHop as a tribute to the late rapper.[21] In September 2016, Team 600, a rap group whom L'A Capone was associated with, released their mixtape In LA We Trust 3, the sequel to the previous mixtapes made in hommage to the late rapper.[22]

Subsequent arrests[edit]

In November 2016, 25-year-old Meiko Buchanan pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and was sentenced at 45 years in prison.[2]
