The statue[edit]

Vrouwe Aleida is a statue of Aleid van Holland in Schiedam. The artwork is made by Theresia van der Pant.[1]

The sculpture is placed on Broersvest in Schiedam at the ruin of the castle Huis te Riviere which Aleid van Holland founded in 1262.

The sculpture is placed on a marble slab.[2]

Aleida herself[edit]

Aleida was the daughter of Willem III Heer van Strijen and Oda van Barselen. Aleida was born on 1270, and died on June the 16th.[3] After she died, she was burried next to her husband. Aleida was a strong woman in the thirteenth century because she dared to lead in a political man's world. She raised seven children and her nephew Floris V to become strong people. Because she lived partly in northern France, and partly in the Netherlands, she raised her children bilingual. Aleida founded the city of Schiedam, brought exceptional architecture to the Netherlands and developed the first hospital of Schiedam via a smart load construction. She ensured that Schiedam became economically important in the region by acquiring the rights for a butter market. She was smart, courageous, managerial, political, visionary, strategic. While Aleida lived, she was leading everything.[4]
