Latinographix

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Founded in 2017, the Ohio State University Press’s Latinographix is an imprint to publish graphic fiction and nonfiction narratives by Latinx creators.[1][2][3]

According to the Pew Research Center’s census data for 2018, at 59.9 million Latinx are 18% of the US population[4]. However, Latinxs are underrepresented in mainstream culture. For instance, in the film industry the Annenberg School determined that from 2007-2018, “only 3% of films featured leads or co leads with Latino actors” in the highest grossing movies[5]. According to the Cooperative Children’s Book Center, of the 3,700 books received in 2017, only 216 had “significant Latinx content/characters” and only “73 of these were by Latinx authors and/or illustrators.[6]

There are many Latinx creators who choose to use the graphic narrative format (drawing and writing) to give shape to stories, histories, biographies, and autobiographies. However, as with other media Latinx graphic narrative creators and their works are underrepresented. Latinographix provides an important publishing venue for Latinx creators to get into the hands of readers, educators, and librarians the significant presence of Latinxs in the shaping of US society, history, and culture.[7]
