Lee Soo Hyuck (이수혁, born 4 January 1949) is a South Korean politician and former diplomat. He is a Member of the National Assembly and is part of the liberal Democratic Party of Korea. He serves on the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee (2017–present)[1]. Previously, he was the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade (2003–2005), Korean Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Federal Republic of Germany (2005-2006) and First Deputy Director, National Intelligence Service(NIS) (2006-2008)[2]. As a career diplomat for over thirty years, Lee has participated in numerous negotiations, including the Four-Party Talks between ROK, DPRK, USA and China (1997), and was the first Chief Negotiator of South Korea in the Six-Party Talks on the North Korean nuclear program[3].

Early life and education[edit]

Lee was born on 4 January 1949 in Jeollabuk-do, South Korea. He graduated from Seoul National University with a bachelor's degree in international relations. He also studied at the University of London in 1977 and received his Master's degree in international relations from Yonsei University in 2003.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (1975-2005)[edit]

After passing the civil examination in 1974, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of ROK in 1975. He was posted at the Korean Mission to the United Nations, and at the Embassies in Peru, Belgium, Cote d'Ivoire, Poland, and the United States of America. While he was posted in the US, he was a member of ROK Delegation to the Four-Party Talks. In 2002, he was sent to Yugoslavia as the ambassador, before being called back to Korea to serve as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Chief Negotiator of South Korea in the Six-Party Talks until the Fourth Round of negotiation.
