Libby Werbel

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Libby Werbel is an artist and curator who was born and lives in Portland, Oregon.[1] Her work as a curator is invested in including underrepresented artists and audiences within institutions, as well as making the museum "more inclusive and critically-engaged with the creators, thinkers, and innovators in the region."[2][3] [4]

Her series of exhibitions at the Portland Art Museum, We. Construct. Marvels. Between. Monuments was described as "an unparalleled one-year program aimed at questioning what kind of art ends up in museums."[5] We, the first exhibition in the series, curated in collaboration with Sonya Hamilton and Public Annex, was "programmed to create space for critical dialogue around how art world institutions can more thoughtfully integrate the work and the perspectives of artists of all abilities."[6]

Career[edit]

Werbel is the founder and director of an art gallery called the Portland Museum of Modern Art (PMOMA). Werbel opened PMOMA in 2013 in the basement of Mississippi Records. At the time she called it "her fake museum."[7] OPB noted that PMOMA is "a tiny space that wittily challenges ideas about the nature of museums and the art-watching experience."[8] The project has received recognition in Artforum,[9] among others, and has been supported by the Precipice Fund, The Calligram Foundation, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Regional Arts & Culture Council.[10] PMOMA has received note for solo exhibitions by artists such as Chris Johansson, Johanna Jackson, Lonnie Holley, Howard Finster, and Sue Tompkins, and has had group shows including the work of artists such as Raul De Nieves, Ray Johnson, Bruce Conner, and Joe Brainard.[1] The programming of PMOMA primarily but not exclusively is focused on the presentation of artists who are self-taught. She has made contributions to Portland arts and culture by supporting artists, working collaboratively with Hollywood Theater, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Portland Art Museum, and, as Mack McFarland, Director of the Center for Contemporary Art & Culture notes, she creates at PMOMA, an atmosphere that is "inclusive and welcoming".[11]

Werbel is also the visiting artistic director at the Portland Art Museum who curated the ambitious, year-long series of exhibitions We. Construct. Marvels. Between. Monuments.[12][13] The exhibition series culminated with what the Willamette Week called "the largest Sun Ra Retrospective yet".[14]

Werbel has curated exhibitions at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art,[15] as well as an exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara.[16]

In 2016, she presented "a containerless museum" and community curatorial project in Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square over two days through a residency program called Houseguest. There was visual art and performances including Fred and Toody Cole of Dead Moon and Dynasty Handbag (Jibz Cameron).[17]

She is currently the Director of Public Programming and Engagement at the Lumber Room.
