Lisandra Ramírez was born in Havana in 1986. She graduated from San Alejandro Art Academy of Havana in 2007, and the Superior Art Institute of Havana (ISA) in 2012, concluding her formal Cuban education. She then studied abroad in Spain and the United States. In Spain she studied bronze casting techniques and continued with a course at the Tisch School of the Arts at the University of New York (NY), United States.
Ramírez works with sculpture, video projection installations, and other mediums. Through her pop art-like works she critiques social and historical issues. She is known for taking aesthetic inspiration from mass-produced Japanese cartoons and animated figures to comment on the nature of mass manufacturing, and how it causes isolation and loneliness one feels in such a society.[1]
Cuban art historian Gabriela García Azcuy explains how in Ramírez’s early work,
“...appropriation and quotation of the infantile universe was already an inherent feature of her creation. Without indulging in a puerile hedonism, she appealed to an effective, universal method of dialogue that would allow her to address dissimilar topics, generally of an anthropological nature.”[2]
Career[edit]
Lisandra Ramírez investigates historical imagery, using stereotypes to talk about historical social problems that continue even today. The imagery of her work allows her to investigate different narrative forms. They achieve an outwardly naive quality that maintain differing questions about the role of the individual as a social being and the undertone of various historical processes in this same tendency. A number of her works are video installations that highlight the dialogue that is made between the sculpture and the projection. Others projects are the sculpture alone, which makes them acquire all the protagonism.[3]
Ramírez has participated in many collective and solo exhibitions in the Cuba and abroad. Recently, she has been collaborating with Studio 7 y 60 where she regularly shows her work alongside other female artists.
