The Archbishop of Omaha is the head of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Omaha, who is responsible for looking after its spiritual and administrative needs. As the archdiocese is the metropolitan see of the ecclesiastical province encompassing nearly all of the Population of State of Nebraska, the Archbishop of Omaha also administers the bishops who head the suffragan dioceses of Omaha and more Rural area.[1] The current archbishop is George Joseph Lucas.
The archdiocese began as the Diocese of Omaha, which was created in 1859. James Myles O'Gorman was appointed its first bishop of Omaha. Under the reign of his successor, James O.Connor, a canonical visitation of the diocese was conducted[2][circular reference] James Hugh Ryan became the first archbishop of the newly-formed metropolitan see.
