The following is a list of awards and nominations received by English actor Sir John Gielgud .
Gielgud had the rare distinction of winning an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Tony . He was famous from the start of his career for his voice and his mastery of Shakespearean verse. Among his honours, he was knighted in 1953 and the Gielgud Theatre was named after him. From 1977 to 1989, he was president of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Gielgud was an actor known for his performances in film, television and the stage. He received two Academy Award nominations winning in Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Arthur (1981). He also received three British Academy Film Awards and two Golden Globe Awards . For his work on theatre he received six Tony Award nominations winning three awards for his work on Broadway stage. For his work on the London stage he received a special Laurence Olivier Award in 1982. For his work on television he received five Primetime Emmy Award nominations winning for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his performance in Summer's Lease (1991). He also received ten Grammy Award nominations winning for Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for Ages of Man in 1980.
