Live Blog is an open-source, live blogging platform used by bloggers and journalists to post minute-by-minute updates including photographs, videos and social media content to a continuously updated news feed.[1] Launched in 2012, Live Blog originated as a collaboration between Sourcefabric and the Global Editors Network (GEN), and continues to be maintained by Sourcefabric z.ú.[2]

    Operation[edit]

Live Blog is a server based application written in Python, and uses the Flask microframework with ReSTful APIs developed in Python-Eve. MongoDB is the main storage, searched/indexed by Elasticsearch. Additionally, Live Blog is an AngularJS single-page application and tasks and messaging use Celery and Redis. Live Blog is maintained on GitHub, where all the technologies and dependencies of the full stack can be examined on the product page. It is licensed under the GNU AGPL version 3.[3] The lastest distribution of Live Blog was released on 12th June 2018 as “Live Blog 3.4”.[4]

    Features and tools[edit]

Core aesthetic features available to Live Blog users include the ability post image slideshows, to highlight & pin posts, and to add scorecards, as well as other rich media, social media, and user-created custom post types.[5]

Content contributed to a Live Blog can be monetized through native and remote advertisements, and optimized through visitor tracking functionality and Google Analytics compatibility.

‘Syndication’ enables larger users to collaborate and share content across news networks, and Theme Management options allows that content to be provided in the appropriate format to each output channel.

A “Live Blog Reporter App” is also available to facilitate on-the-ground live blog coverage.[6]

    Community engagement and co-development[edit]

In 2017, as part of the Google Digital News Initiative[7] and with the support of the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, Sourcefabric began integrating both a marketplace for the commercial distribution of live news content[8], and 'Live Bridge' an open source program for the translation of live content across platforms such as Slack or Telegram into the Live Blog “Live Coverage Ecosystem”.[9][10]
