Louise Landes Levi (1944) - American poet, translator and musician, born in New York City, of German Armenian/Romanian heritage - educated in post-war era, public school in Great Neck, NY & Temple Beth El, then UC-Berkeley, graduating w. honors, in program which informed the Tussman School of Education, Doina a folk opera is her thesis. A scholarship fr. The Ali Akbar School of Music then situated at Mills College. Together w. experimental musicians, poets & dancers in the Bay Area, founding member of The Floating Lotus Magic Opera Company, directed by Daniel (sic Abdal Hayye) Moore.

Further studies in India of No. Indian classical music & poetics, cult classic RASA, Essays on Indian Aesthetics, translated fr. French of  René Daumal & the Love Poems of Mira Bai, fr. Middle Hindi poet saint of the 16th century follow. Works closely w. Henri Michaux in Paris, who supports these projects, her translations of the master French poet published by Shiva Stan, 2006.

Levi has published dozens of phamlets, broadsides, chap books & poetry books. Despite the loss of her work, post India, & w. the help of the lamas, then active in the West, she resumed working & founded her own press Il Bagatto w. Dutch aristocrat turned rebel Sofia Bentinck, publishing chap books, post cards, broadsides, cassettes & then CD’s.

Music recordings, honouring years of apprenticeship on the piazzas, in the train stations, on the hillsides of the cities, & her studies, NYC w. La Monte Young & Marian Zazeela, both as their student & as monitor of their installation, The Dream House. From the Ming Oracle honours the wonderful Ming Auralia which covered their window on Church Street, NYC, shoots of which were freely offered to Dream House visitors).


Her later musical work can be seen as a  part of the American post-war experimental and avant-garde collective, influenced by the Indian classical tradition & inherent drones in both the spiritual & folk traditions of the planet. She continued, in India. studies, w. Pandit Ram Narayan, then won a scholarship to the National Center for Performing Arts & thereby was the student of Shirmati Annapurna Devi & Ustad Abdul Majid Khan, himself a student of Bundu Khan. In Europe, she studied w. Ali Akbar Khan, Annapura's brother, at the Conservatory of Music in Basel & then at his college in San Raphael & personally w. German drone master Klaus Wiese

Her early cassettes, now CDs, Padma & Kinnari are available online or through her directly. Levi has performed her music for experimental music & poetry venues, in the USA, EU & Japan, accompanied the great American poet & photographer, Ira Cohen, in NYC & Amsterdam, worked, in NYC w. Sylvia Degliez, Eagle Eye Orchestra, most notably for her presentation of Angus MacLise's opera ORPHE, at the Kitchen & continues to perform, read her own work & lecture, when requested.


For many years the student of Choegyal Namkhai Norbu, she still lives in a small tower on the outskirts of his first ‘center’ (an ornament of the teachings, winter quarters elsewhere
