Love Is For Losers is a studio album by Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, released under the pseudonym The Longshot..[1][2] It was released on April 20, 2018. It features original songs written for the album, songs previously written for the musical These Paper Bullets and the film Ordinary World, and one cover song.[3] It was preceded by the release of a 3-song preview, entitled The Longshot EP, on April 12th[4][5], and several audio teases posted to Instagram in the weeks leading up to the album announcement.[6]

While Armstrong performs all instruments on the album, during live performances billed under The Longshot, he is joined by Kevin Preston and David S. Field of the band Prima Donna on guitar and drums, respectively, and longtime Green Day live member Jeff Matika on bass.[7][8] A music video was released for the album's title track on April 20th. On April 23rd, an additional single, entitled "Devil's Kind," was released, and Armstrong posted several unheard demos and cover songs from the Longshot project to the music-sharing platform SoundCloud.[9]

Critical Reception[edit]

NME gave the album four out of five stars, writing that it was Armstrong's "best album since [Green Day's] American Idiot".[1] Punk News awarded the album three out of five stars, comparing it favorably to the Green Day album Warning[10]. The Soundboard Reviews also spoke favorably of the album, awarding it a 7 out of 10 and calling it a "...breath of fresh air, simplified and free from political hang-ups...capturing a lighthearted mixture of power-pop and classic garage-rock."[11] Pure Magazine gave Love Is For Losers high praise, awarding the album a full five out of five stars, calling it "an utterly entrancing synthesis of punk, rock, and pop", going on to refer to the songs as "fantastically spunky" and "enthrallingly energetic."[7]

Kerrang! complimented the album's songwriting, writing that Armstrong "...proves yet again...how he's got great songs running through his veins, so much that if you close your eyes and put your finger on a track you'd likely land on one that could be a single."[12]The Las Vegas Journal-Review referred to the project as similar to late-career Green Day tracks, but distinguished the Longshot songs' "delivery" as "raw, urgent, unrefined...and fun," praising Armstrong for his enthusiasm and "looseness" in live performances of the material[13]

The album charted at number 16 on the UK Rock Albums chart.[14] On the iTunes album charts, it reached number 23 in the United States, number 14 in the United Kingdom, number 19 in Canada, and number 17 in Brazil.[15][16][17][18]
