Love Possibly is the 2018 romantic comedy mockumentary debut film co-written and co-directed by Ché Grant & Michael Boccalini. It features Steve Hodgetts as Alex Clough. Filmed mostly on location in and around London and Romania, the screenplay revolves around Alex Clough's quest to find love for the first time in his life.

Plot[edit]

A fly-on-the-wall documentary film crew follow Alex, a hopelessly romantic, rom-com obsessed virgin on a quest to find love. After a lifetime of failed attempts on the dating scene, he decides to look for a bride online. He falls in love with Lana from Moldova, whom he met on BridesRus.com. Uninvited, Alex flies over to propose, only to be unceremoniously rejected. Dejected, he returns home but receives a surprise phone call from, Lana, who's decided to give it a go. With Lana's arrival, he quickly finds himself out of his depth when he realises that she is his only chance at love. Desperate, Alex applies every rom-com rule he's ever learned, in a bid to secure her heart.

Production[edit]

Development[edit]

Love Possibly was developed out of a fascination the writer/directors both had with different human relationships, and how some people can start with, amongst other things, unrealistic expectations and ideas about love. And while some people go to extreme lengths to find happiness, others easily forego that same happiness for the sake of security. The story was written from a deeply personal place because of Michael's relationship with his father and his then-new mail-order bride and from Ché's growing up an only child and how that influenced his relationship with girls. The concept of mail-order brides and the men that marry them is an extreme example of romantic duality and a theme not commonly explored, especially not from a comic documentary perspective. Although the story had been carefully crafted, improvisation played a very large part and was both a great source of comedy as well as truthfulness. There was a vulnerability and spontaneity in improvisation that both directors absolutely loved.

Casting[edit]

Michael and Ché cast Steve Hodgetts after working on his showreel. They never actually formally auditioned him, just offered him the part of 'Alex' there on the spot to which he said yes straight away.

Filming[edit]

Most of the film was made on location in London, including Trafalgar Square, next to the fountain in Piccadilly Circus in the Strand. Outside the blue door in Notting Hill. Romania was used in place of Moldova in the film.

Reception[edit]

Critical response[edit]

Love Possibly received acclaim from critics, with praise going towards the screenplay and performances (particularly Hodgetts). On IMDB the film has an approval rating of 6.6/10. Tom Beasley of filmstories.co.uk called it a "romcom mockumentary that’s quite good fun."[1] Kip Hakes of kiphakes.com had the summary of his review which read "the acting is exceptional, and the film looks terrific." and went on to say of the film "I think it’s fair to say that Love Possibly is unlike any romantic comedy you’ve ever seen before." He awarded the film 5 stars (out of 5)."[2]

Marion Donnellier of moviemarker.co.uk wrote that "The film’s is lifted by fantastic central performances. Steve Hodgetts’ Alex might be painful to watch at times but quickly makes way for a loving and touching character." and that "Love Possibly is warm and witty comedy that is impossible not to relate to."[3]

The Monthly Film Festival's review of Love Possibly was also very positive. To quote, they wrote"‘Love Possibly‘ is hilarious! It is by far the funniest feature film we’ve had in this competition in the past few years." as well as "‘Love Possibly’ is the 21st century Romeo and Juliet made specifically for the millennials. Breathtakingly funny and nicely put together!"[4]
