Luis Villanueva is an American-Venezuelan media entrepreneur who has worked in international banking, finance, and entertainment industries. Villanueva is presently the Chairman and CEO of SOMOS GROUP, a Miami-based entertainment group of companies formed by SOMOSTV (a pay-tv production and distribution company), Somos Distribution (a global content distribution entity), SOMOS Production (an independent TV production enterprise), SOMOS Next (a direct-to-consumer digital content distribution company) and SOMOS Films (in charge of feature films’ production).[1] [2]

Early Life[edit]

Villanueva’s career started in the financial sector as Finance Manager of Corp Banca (Venezuela), one of the main banking institutions in Venezuela. In 1982 he joined the Cisneros Group. His career in the Latin American media conglomerate included positions in front of Operating Units (Chief Operating Officer of Venevision Television Network - Channel 4 in Venezuela; President of Venevision-Chile and Corporate Staff (Executive Vice-President of Finance and Corporate Development, among others). For 12 years Luis Villanueva was the President and CEO of Venevision International, diversifying this company from an international TV programming distributor to an entertainment enterprise that participated in TV Production, Film Distribution, Pay TV channels, publishing, live events, music production and distribution, mobile content production and distribution and other businesses.[3][4][5]

SOMOS Group[edit]

In SOMOSTV, Luis Villanueva led the launch two Pay TV channels focused in Spanish speaking audiences: ViendoMovies (a 24-hr. film channel in Spanish) targeting the US and Puerto Rico and Semillitas (a children channel) covering the US Hispanic and Latino Americans, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America.[6] [7] [8]

Villanueva has been the producer of several TV series and dramas such as “Hasta Que Te Conocí” (a biopic of the Mexican singer “Juan Gabriel”), “Súbete a Mi Moto” (biopic of famous the Puerto Rican boy band Menudo (group), teenagers telenovelas like “11-11, “Ginayei” , "11-11: En mi cuadra nada cuadra” and “Vikki RPM” , produced for Nickelodeon Latino America among other TV programs and live shows like “Premios Billboard de la Música Mexicana” and the “Latin American Music Awards” for the Television network Telemundo.[9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]

In the Spanish language film industry, Luis Villanueva has been the executive producer of feature films produced by SOMOS Films in Latin American countries, among them “El Paraíso de la Serpiente” (Mexico), “Angels Inc” (Mexico) “Muerte en Berruecos” (Venezuela and Ecuador), “Voy Por Ti” (Venezuela), “Especial” (Venezuela), “Un Cupido sin Puntería” (Venezuela), “Amor en el Aire” (Colombia), “Al Revés” (Puerto Rico) and “El Quinceañero de mi Abuela” (Puerto Rico).[18][19][20][21] [22] [23][24][25]

SOMOS Next offers the entertainment subscription video on demand service (SVOD) “FlixLatino” to the US and Puerto Rico markets while SOMOS Distribution is a worldwide content distribution company.[26][27][28][29]

Other Activities[edit]

Luis Villanueva sat on the Directory of several international companies, among them Claxson (XSON), Cervecerias Peruanas Backus & Johnston and was a member of the Board of the Latin Recording Academy (Latin Grammy’s). He is a member of several organizations such as the International Emmys and the Entrepreneurial Council for Institutional Development of the Universidad Austral in Argentina. He has been for several years a jury of the Platino Awards, an Iberoamerican film award organized by EGEDA (an organization that represents the rights of film producers from Spanish speaking countries).[30][31][32][33][34]

Mr. Villanueva has been a recipient of honors from the Venezuelan government: the Order of Diego de Losada in its First Class and the Order of Francisco de Miranda in its Second Class. In March of 2002 Mr. Villanueva was honored with the keys to the city of Miami by the Miami-Dade County in Florida, for his role in Venevision International’s contribution to the arts and culture of the local community.
