Luke Roper

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Luke Roper is a fashion designer who graduated from Central St Martin’s College of Art & Design in London and helped to set up private UK-based clothing retailer Luke 1977, which specialises in selling casual wear, shoes and accessories for men.

Born on 12th April in 1977 and raised in Walsall Wood, Luke’s passion for fashion began when watching his mum Joan in her role as a wedding dress designer and seamstress, while his father John worked in farming. As the youngest of five children, he learned the sewing basics and by the time he was a teenager he had started using shop-bought patterns to make shirts for himself and his friends. After leaving The Shire Oak Academy (formerly Shire Oak School) in Walsall Wood, he studied BTEC Fashion and Textiles at Walsall College from 1995 to 1997, earning a place at the prestigious Central St Martin’s College on a dedicated menswear degree, where he graduated from in 2000.[1]

Having landed his first job as a junior designer for shirts and denim with high street retailer River Island, Luke stayed there just four months before creating his own Luke 1977 clothing range - and first started trading from the back of a van with just three printed T-shirt designs.[2] He has since helped Luke 1977 grow to have 11 stores in the UK. In 2010, the company was named Young Fashion Brand of the Year at the Drapers Awards.

He met his wife Tracey, who is from Tamworth, at a trade show in London in 2005 where she was shopping with friends and happened to be staying in the same hotel. The couple were engaged after one year, before getting married two-and-a-half years later.[3]
