MARS: Shooting Stars Tournament was a mixed martial arts (MMA) event held on November 22, 1996, at Bill Harris Arena, in Birmingham, Alabama, as part of the MARS MMA event, created by Tom Huggins and John Keating.[1]
History[edit]
The event was a complete eight men tournament, with three alternate fights, and it was held before the MARS event[2], on the same day and arena. The fights had no time limits, no rounds and no judges. The tournament featured fighters who had either already been in other larger events, such as Anthony Macias, John Dixon, Gene Lydick and Moti Horenstein; and fighters who had previously auditioned for their spots in the tournament. The auditions were private fights held over the course of months before the event and are known nowadays as the Atlanta Pit Fights (or Atlanta Fights).
The footage is sought after by MMA collectors because it was never broadcast or commercially released, so only the live fans viewed it. Over the years, bootleg copies of the event have continued to appear occasionally. It has been referred to as the Holy Grail of classic MMA videos by collectors[3]
The tournament winner was Mark Hanssen, from Davenport, Iowa, a training partner of Pat Miletich - who, at that time, had not yet made his television debut[4]. The event is often confused with MARS by fans and historians because it was not broadcasted nor publicized before or after the event as part of the show. Because it was not broadcast and commissions did not regulate the sport at the time, registering the results, many of the fighters didn’t included their participation in the event on their official record.
