History[edit]
Aikins, MacAulay & Thorvaldson LLP[edit]
Founded in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1879 by Sir James Albert Manning Aikins (1851-1929). John A. MacAulay (1892-1978) joined in 1920 and Gunnar Solmunder (Solly) Thorvaldson (1901-1969) added to the permanent company name in April 1969.
About Sir James Aikins[edit]
After his call to the Ontario bar in 1878, Sir Aikins moved to Winnipeg and was called to the Manitoba bar in February 1879, and established his own law firm (which was the predecessor of Aikins, MacAulay & Thorvaldson) shortly thereafter. Sir Aikins formed the Manitoba Bar Association in 1911, serving as its first president. He helped establish the Canadian Bar Association in 1915, acting as president until 1927, staying on as an honorary president for the remaining years of his life.
MacPherson Leslie & Tyerman LLP[edit]
Founded in 1920 in Regina, Saskatchewan, by Murdoch Alexander MacPherson (1891-1966). Everett Leslie (1893-1978) joined him in 1925 and David Tyerman in 1929, with the firm name becoming fixed in 1951.
