Maamaankam is an upcoming big budget Indian Malayalam language epic Periodic action war film written and directed by debutant Sajeev Pillai. It's the tale of the brave warriors of Malabar. During the Mamankam festival held at the banks of Bharathapuzha in Tirunavaya, soldiers from all over the country used to come together to wager battles and combat.[3]

Plot[edit]

The film revolves around the life of warriors known as Chaaverukal, who plot against the Zamorin ruler to overthrow them.

Cast[edit]

Production[edit]

Sajeev, a former associate of Adoor Gopalakrishnan, has done research works for over 12 years to script the film.A week-long first schedule of filming has been done in mid-February 2018 in Mangalore[9], where some sets were erected and sword fights were shot.Mammootty and Neeraj Madhav were part of the phase.

Its technical crew includes renowned cinematographer Ganesh Rajavelu a.k.a Jim Ganesh, action choreographer Kaecha Khamphakdee, music director M Jayachandran and VFX supervisor Kamala Kannan. Venu Kunnampilly of Kavya Films is producing this ambitious project.

Music[edit]

M. Jayachandran will be composing music for the film.[10]

Controversies[edit]

  • In early 2018 during the first schedule of the film Mammootty got hurt while shooting an important stunt scene in the film, which was being re-shot for perfection. It was told that he wont be able to complete the film and he backed from the film. But soon he himself confirmed that it is a minor injury and there is no need of backing from such a huge movie.[11]
  • Queen fame Dhru an was excluded from the film just before the shoot and no proper statements were given for his exclusion. The young actor had been undergoing a course in the Kerala martial art Kalaripayattu and had worked regularly at the gym to develop his physique like that of the legendary warriors.[12]
  • The shooting of the film has been stopped as the producer was not happy with the way Sajeev Pillai is doing the film as a major portion of the films budget has been spent to shoot a small part of the film and most of them were of no use.
  • Lead director M. Padmakumar has joined the production team as a co-director and the shooting has again started without director Sajeev Pillai.Only the shots which are considered to be ok by the editor will be taken from the earlier filmed shoots and others will have to be re-shoot.

Themes and influences[edit]

  • It is based on the Mamankam festival,an ancient time festival held in Kerala in which brave warriors from different parts of world paricipated.
