Professor Mahmoud Alkofahi is the father, the founder, the facilitator, and the force of the JANA organization. Professor Alkofahi is a graduate from MIT with a Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Physics. He did his research on the fusion of heavy ions and succeeded in identifying the angular momentum and properties of such super heavy nuclei. After graduation in 1982, he was offered a job at Argon National Laboratory as a heavy ion nuclear physicist, but decided to go back to his home country of Jordan. He joined the Physics Department at Yarmouk University where he played an instrumental role in building the undergraduate and graduate programs and supervised the first Master thesis at the department.[1] He contributed to the Arabization movement by writing several text books; one of which would became the leading textbooks in teaching Electricity and Magnetism with more than 150,000 copies published and distributed all over the Arab world.

In 1986, he was one of 14 nuclear physicist who were selected by the University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He was assigned the task of creating two nuclear accelerators for the Research Institute at the university. Once completed, he returned back to the Yarmouk University and was offered a chair at the department of physics in 1989. In the same year, seven of his projects were approved and funded with about 5 million JDs from the European Union. This endorsement enabled him to build a strong graduate program at the Physics Department and to train faculty and staff at European facilities over a period of 10 years.

Before completing his 2-years term as chairman, he was selected by the Arab Atomic Energy Authority (Tunis) to lead its scientific team as the Director of Science and Technology.[2] He organized more than 50 workshops/ training programs about the peaceful applications of nuclear technology in the member states. He organized the First Arab Conference for the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy in Tripoli, Libya. Many world figures delivered talks in the conference including Hans Blix, the Director General of IAEA (Vienna) and six of his deputies.

During his work at AAEA, he arranged for Jordan to have its first Nuclear Reactor training session with generous contributions and underlying support from AAEA which in turn helped him capitalized his strong connections with the community as well. Unfortunately, challenges along the way prevented the training from taking place. He initiated scientific research at the Physics Department of Yarmouk University in Material Characterization and Analysis using X-Ray Spectrometry Techniques and lead a team of 7 members of the department.[3] He also initiated environmental research in Radon Monitoring in the department, and published the first scientific paper in the most reputed journal in the field published by Pergamon Press (UK). He applied X-Ray Spectrometery in studying coinage belonging to various Umayyad, Abbasid, Mamluk, and Ayyubid periods of our history, and published his work in the most reputed journal in the field, X-Ray Spectrometry, John Wiley (USA).

During the period 1995-2001, he had supervised more than 20 students who had done their Master thesis on XRF or Radon research. In 2001, he joined Balqa Applied University on Sabbatical leave from Yarmouk University and served as the Dean of Science and Information Technology and Director of Computer Center.[4] He initiated many programs for the college and for the computer center, including building the computer network and database that was needed to run placement exams online. He was part of the faculty of physics also at BAU and supervised the first Master thesis in physics. He took pride in laying down the foundations for professional academic work ethics and practices at BAU. Prof AlKofahi is the founder of the faculty promotion program that was approved by the cousins up of higher education. In 2005, he came to the US and joined Baker University (Kansas) on a tenure track position and was tenured in 2009 as a professor of physics. He built the physics labs and promoted undergraduate research among students. In addition, he joined University of Phoenix (Phoenix, Arizona) in 2006 as an online instructor. Also, joined Thomas Edison State University (New Jersey) in 2013.[citation needed] He has gained the needed skills for facilitating and mentoring online classes in various disciplines. He took pride in establishing JANA as a social media group (Facebook) and registering it as a non-profit organization in Kansas with ultimate goal of developing an Online University that can provide opportunities for people to pursue their higher education at a low cost. During the past few months, he created websites for the organization at www.janau.organd www.janau.net and is working now on preparing the ground for starting some educational training programs to be offered on a volunteer basis by colleagues at JANA.[5]
