Making Caring Common

Making Caring Common, is a program run out of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Led by Richard Weissbourd, Making Caring Common conducts original research, publishes reports, provides programming to schools, and develops strategies for teachers, parents, and children.[1]

  • "The Children We Mean to Raise" examines how parents and adults are often sending mixed messages to youth when it comes to what they value, research conducted by Making Caring Common is highlighted in this report.[2] [3] [4]
  • "Learning Out: Teen Girls & Leadership Biases" suggests that teen girls face a powerful barrier to leadership: gender bias. The report includes recommendations for educators and parents on how to avoid and curtail gender biases.[5] [6] [7]
  • “Turning the Tide: Inspiring Concern For Others And The Common Good Through College Admissions” offers recommendations for changing the college admissions process to promote greater ethical engagement among aspiring students, reduce excessive achievement pressure, and level the playing field for economically disadvantaged students.[8] [9]
  • “The Talk: How Adults Can Promote Young People’s Healthy Relationships and Prevent Misogyny and Sexual Harassment” explains how adults can engage teens in conversations about sexual harassment, misogyny, consent, and healthy romantic relationships.[10] [11] [12] [13]

Strategies for Teachers and Parents[edit]

Making Caring Common develops original and composed strategies and resources for teachers and parents on a wide range of topics. These topics include bullying prevention; college admissions; parenting resources for raising ethical, caring children; school resources for promoting caring and respect; social and emotional learning; teens and ethical romantic relationships; and teens and gender bias.[14] Making Caring Common also works directly with schools as part of its Caring Schools Network, Empathy in Schools Initiative, Caring Schools #CommonGood campaign, and Youth Advisory Board.[15]

Faculty director[edit]

Richard Weissbourd is the faculty director of Making Caring Common, as well as a senior lecturer of education and faculty director of the Human Development and Psychology Master’s Program at Harvard Graduate School of Education.[31] Weissbourd’s present work centers around “vulnerability and resilience in childhood, the achievement gap, moral development, and effective schools and services for children”.[32] Weissbourd “has advised on the city, state, and federal levels on family policy and school reform and has written for numerous scholarly and popular publications.”[33]
